Northern Rock - (merged)

Can anyone help with this one??

I have always done business with NR.

I want to try and reclaim my early repayment charges on previous mortgages I had with them, and also any reclaim any other excessive charges that I can using the standard letter templates.

Can Northern Rock close my existing mortgage account down if I do this?

Also, I have not received a response from them for the statutory data protection information within the 40 days. Shall I make the complaint to information commissioner on the 40th day?

Many thanks,

  • Hiya,

Just wondering if you've had any luck with Northern Rock? I've just had my letter back detailing the charges to my account over the last 6 years so will be sending my letter asking for the money back tomorrow!

  • Hi,

Has anybody had any success reclaiming bank charges from Northern Rock? I have had my letter today detailing the charges they have made on my account over the last 6 years and I note that a lot of these are the £7 charge for authorised overdraft. Can I claim those fees as well as unauthorised overdraft etc.?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers.

I'm happy and very grateful to this website and to Martin. I'm only just starting but now realising I'm owed lots more than I thought. I thought it was maybe hundreds but it looks like into a few thousand, to my amazement. Northern Rock today replied to my request for details of 6 years' charges - their list only goes back to 2003 and they have avoided admitting this by stating "I list below the charges on your account"! I can't remember if I was using the account before 2003, but I think I was, I've had the account for 15 years. So I'm going to start the process with what I have, but get confirmation from them that there aren't earlier charges. The interest calculator was really helpful, I really get mental blocks with interest etc!!

I initially heard about this site because I got a spam email offer to reclaim my charges for me (for a fee) and I decided to browse to find out more, as I hadn't by that stage heard of reclaiming charges. I'm glad I decided to do it myself, as it's actually quite good fun.

Just a little advice to not accept any confirmation that there were no previous charges and to insist on all details for the last 6 years. I've been sent a paltry letter in one of my requests for such and it is blatantly incomplete. I've noted the concealment and insisted on full details for my own perusal I wont be taking their word for it.

good luck in your claim :)

Thanks for the advice, I've written to them today asking for the full six years' charges. I think that this also is an attempt at concealment, although I just can't remember that far back, and am not going to take their word for it! I've also asked them to complete this within the time frame of the original letter - otherwise I've got another 40 day wait!

Good idea I forgot to mention I only gave them a further 14 days to complete the initial task set :)

Yes thanks for letting me know what you did - I didn't have my initial letter to hand - filed away somewhere but I think they only have about ten days left, so I will write again with deadline date.
  • Hi All,

Really starting to shift with my bank charges. However, I`m trying to claim back late payment charges on my mortgage and have recieved a letter today from Northern Rock stating that all charges are fair and that "the charges do not represent any form of damages for breach of contract and were simply charges for service. You were clearly and unambiguously notified of the charges, prior to entering the mortgage agreement"

    So essentially, get lost.

there are bits and bobs of other legal mumbo jumbo and I get the impression that the use of terms like "clearly and unambiguously" are designed to throw me off the scent.

Is anybody else in a similar situation and what success stories do we have with Northern Rock?..........

Any advice on how to take this further would be greatly appreciated....

    Cheers Jimmy
