Was asking a few days ago about flat screen monitors. Have looked at various types and now know what I should be looking for. The only thing that has me confused is do I need a normal screen or a widescreen. What are the benefits of a widescreen one. I dont watch films, I dont do gaming, just usual normal home computer things. Which one is better. Have seen some good deals on some widescreen ones but would it be okay for normal everyday use

I use a widescreen as I can then have the Google toolbar on the side with RSS feeds etc. & still have a decent sized screen for everything else. If you don't use Google or watch movies then IMHO widescreen is a waste of time.0

I have a HannsG 19' widescreen monitor which I find useful since I use chat clients, email and surf pretty much all at the same time sometimes and I don't have to continually minimise one to see another. Plus, should I ever watch movies etc, it will then come more into its own I suppose. Since there are 19 inch widescreens on play.com for 99 pounds delivered, it seems a pretty decent avenue to go down in my mind. As was said, it's not an essential type of monitor and whether you will benefit or not just depends on what kind of use you may get from it in comparison to a normal screen. For me at least, I'm happy with it.0

There's nothing like having a look firsthand. If possible have a go on a mate's widescreen monitor, or go into PC World/similar retailers where you can see them in action for yourself.
Another advantage with widescreen is that it's easier to work on two documents side-by-side.
Websites (the widescreen-coded ones, including MSE) look so much better too.
I used a 4:3 CRT for several years, then moved to a widescreen TFT (with not a little doubt) about 6 months ago. I needn't have worried - I'll never go back to a 4:3 one again. I'm sure you'll like it as well.
callmelinda, I probably have the same monitor as you

Get a good quality HP 20.1" widescreen for £140. Normally sells for about £220.
Deal is based on price of £190 from here, plus £50 cashback offer from HP until end of April.

The same has been suggested in one of patcat's earlier posts - New flat screen monitor needed. GToxteth_OGrady wrote:Get a good quality HP 20.1" widescreen for £140....0 -

I've the HW191D model, I think it's great and it's come down in price since I bought it - I got it for £140 I think but you can now get it for £117 delivered from dabs. I was happy with it at £140 never mind anything less.0 -
Novatech have a 22" widescreen for £222.0

i think its alot to do with personal taste - I cant use my pop's huge 22" beast of a monitor, i just dont know where to look, it gives me a headache. I just want to see one window at a time, either word, a game, IE, or whatever. That said I do have 28 windows open right now, but I only ever want to see one at a time. Alt-tab for the win!
So yeah, its preference, 19 is fine for me, some people seem to have a heart attack at the suggestion that big isnt best. These people have been brainwashed into thinking that they need 20, no - 30, no - 40, hay why not the whole wall....
Of course realistically, there is an optimal size before you have to start sitting back from the screen to take it all in or you end up straining your eyes, look up, look down, no wait its over here, no there
. I prefer to bring what I want to the centre of the screen, others may prefer to move their neck, eyes etc, each to their own - we will all have different capacities before our eyes start complaining at sitting in front of a screen for hours... at which point its time to switch off and do something less boring instead!
