TFT montors

  • Widescreen 16:9 ratio is said to be the preferred format for the human eyes and brain...

However some PC's graphics cards do not support the native resolutions of widescreen TFT Monitors. If yours doesn't then you will be better off choosing a traditional 4:3 TFT Monitor.

You can use a widescreen monitor with any Graphics Card, but if the input image in 4:3 format, and the screen 16:9, the screen electronics have to reshape the image it is presented with. The resulting image is nowhere near as clear as that which has not been electronically resized.

Rule of thumb with any TFT minitor, always have your graphics card (windows desktop) running at the native resoloution of the TFT screen, that way you will get the best image possible.

Think I will stick to a normal 4:3 screen. My computer is about 3 years old and I have no idea about the graphics card, doubt if there were widescreen monitors around then !!!!. So thanks everyone for your input. I am leaning towards an LG one, as the reviews I have read all seem excellent and they have a 3 year warranty or maybe a Hanns.

My g'card is around 4½ years old but supports the widescreen format - a card's drivers play a role too. If you tell us your g'card model (use SIW if you don't know), we'll be able to tell you whether it'll work or not.

Don't forget to have a look at both formats firsthand if you can.
    I've the HW191D model....
    That's what I've got too (for £105 btw). G

Actually look under Hardware > Video > Modes & click on Width (to sort descending). Does it show 1440 & 900 (for Height)? This is what mine shows - click here. G

no, it only goes up to 1280x1024 with either 16 bits,(64k) 32 bits(4096M) or 8 bits(256). so am I right in thinking that w/screen is not supported.

Yes, it probably doesn't. But updated drivers could change that. My neighbour has a PC with integrated graphics but it supports the 1440x900 res that her 19" widescreen TFT requires.

When you click on/highlight Video, what does it say in line with Caption & Name in the right pane? I'm trying to determine the name of your graphics card/integrated graphics. Then we can search for any updated drivers available for download. G
