New flat screen monitor needed

Can anyone give me some pointers with regard to flatscreen monitors. I have a big old tv type one at the moment which is playing up a bit. so would like to get a new flat screen one. I have no idea what I should be looking for though. I dont need an 'all singing all dancing' one. I dont watch films or play games on it, just usual day to day surfing, banking etc. I know I want at least a 17" but thats as far as I go. dont want to spend too much but want a reliable one. So any suggestions of inexpensive but reliable ones and what features I need would be appreciated.

have a look here, I bought a 19" lcd off them 2 years ago never had any trouble with it, still working fine now, and expect it to for the future, and I am going to be buying another 19" widescreen for my son at the end of the month,
hope this helps
go off what it tells you for this one and you wont go wrong.
all have 3 years warranty back to base, so if they do go wrong they just arrange a day to swap them over,

As far as brands go - LG give a very good balance between very good quality for a pretty decent price.

Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0 -
Try and get one with as high a contrast ratio as possible, ideally 750:1 and upwards, and a good refresh rate, lower the better.
Do you need widescreen or normal, as some 19" normal are only a few pounds more than most 17"Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
I'd suggest this HP L2045w 20.1" widescreen TFT for £140.33 (after £50 cashback) - full details in this post by fuzed.
If that's too expensive, wait for this Hanns-G 19" widescreen DVI TFT's price to drop again - it was £111.62 a few days ago (£105 ~6 months ago). G0 -
I just want a 'bog standard' monitor. Dont like widescreen tv, so probably wouldnt like it on a monitor. I guess from what everyone says, I need
Normal screen
either a 17 or 19",
good refresh rate, (lower the better)
good resolution (higher the better)
Contrast ratio should that be higher the better ?
Integral speakers ( dont listen to music, just need to hear the windows sounds)
The 17" ones on Ebuyer look quite good, will have to do some comparisons.
Thanks everyone, you have been a great help.0
