Bt Line Connection for new build (merged)

I am moving into a brand new home and phoned BT to get the line connected. I am sure that all the telephone points are already installed. I was told that the connection charge would be £75. Is this about right for a first connection and are there any 'tricks of the trade' that I can use to try and get out of paying fot it??
Thanks, Bhushan

BT wont budge on the connection fee. Does anyone know if NTL charge a fee for this type of new connection and what is their service like?
Thanks, Bhushan

Yes. £75 is their standard 'new build' price.
The builder's electrician will probably have done the internal telephone wiring in the house but BT will have wired to each house (usually underground these days). BT charge the first person who has a line connected in each new dwelling £75 to connect up and that covers part of what they spent running the external cables.30 years, 217 days!0 -
Thanks for that super quick reply.0

Is cable available ?
if so, find out the cost and tell BT.Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.0 -
Or better still just get cable and use VoIP.
Although this is fraught with complications, it's alot cheaper especially if you have to pay £75 to get connected. You could save yourselv over £2000 -
Hi there, just to give you some more info regarding the cost of installing a line to a new house, the actual cost should be in excess of £300 to cover the cost of running cable from the nearest connection point to the property, the cost of the ductwork, the digging contractors, the planning engineers, local authority planning, the sales staff wages, the cost of the first network termination equipment, the exchange engineers labor, alterations to phone records for the 118 sites, credit checks etc, etc.
Hope this helps some.0 -
Has anyone found a way of getting out of the £90 BT insist on charging for a new phone line at a new build? I have tried contacting other phone companies (cable etc..) and been told they they can't it is exclusive to BT at the moment.
An avid hater of BT and the naff service, I also don't want to be tied into having a line with BT for 1 year. We have mobiles on contract with 900 minutes a month between us, so it is only for the internet we will be using the line. Anyway managed to find a way around this? or the builders taking back handers from BT?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

so you are complaining about paying £90 when it may have cost BT £50,000 to run the cable into the area in the first place....if it was the water board you have to pay the full cost of getting to the Sewer/mains water yourself !!!
not having a go but if you look at it my way you are getting a bargain !Ex forum ambassador

Is Bulldog Broadband available in your area?

Only £1 to install a new telephone line.

It might be worth trying to find a wireless ISP in your area something like this http://www.netvigator.co.uk/main.html (this is not a referral, just an example of wireless access/coverage).
Browntoa - as for BT paying for the cost of cabling the area, you may not be aware that most of BT's copper phone network would have been written off their books years ago, but they still charge everyone full line rental! BT charge £10.50 line rental per month (using Direct Debit) and the cost of maintaining that line would be a small fraction of that cost. So I think BT could easily cover the £50K cost and reduce the installation price (seeing as new builds usually have a master socket already installed).0
