Is it possible to send a text message to a landline?

I just had a text message on my mobile from a mate.

Shortly after, my landline rang and when I answered it, it was a recorded message from BT(im on cable) and the woman read out the same text message I had on my mobile! Was quite funny actually.

I was quite surprised as Id never seen this before - she even told me who had sent it.

Is this new? Do I get charged to listen etc? Also what is the bt link??

  • I've been using this for some while. You can send a text with Vodafone and 3, but it didn't work on T-Mobile. My landline is with NTL. I don't think that this service has been advertised at all - not sure why tho'

Works on Orange as well. As far as i know you don't get charged just for picking up the phone and listening to the text when the phone rings.

    Really good innovation IMO.

This service is actually designed for use with SMS enabled home phones. Really need to subscribe to caller ID to use it effectivley. The actual text message will then appear on the landline phone. If you don't use caller ID then the message becomes a spoken message by an automated operator. Hence the reason you can all get spoken text messages. It can sometimes be very difficult to understand them as most seem to origionate in India.

Good example of text enabled dect phones at an unbelievable 60% off Argos price.
Great for receiving text, not so easy for sending as the predictive text is prety naff.

It's also a way of spreading junk text messages, which has confused people when they get a message to call some answerphone service; there's a thread about it somewhere
