NHS Dentistry Petition

Hi all,
I wondered about adding this to the NHS dentistry patient information thread, but decided it could do with a thread on it's own.
If you have an NHS dentist, or if you don't, the New Contract that was imposed on the Dental Profession in April 2006 is a completely untested system, designed to take NHS dentistry back to the 1950s when extractions and dentures were all you could expect.
Readers of my other posts will have a clear idea of my thoughts on this contract - or ConTrick as it's called in the profession!
There are many systems that could use the existing funding more fairly and equitably so that everybody could get something from NHS dentistry, but pay for the more advanced treatments as 'extras' over and above a basic state provision.
A colleague of mine has set up an ePetition on the 10 Downing Sreet web-site.
God knows how much notice will be taken of it, but the petition calls for the current NHS contract to be scrapped.
I would be grateful if as many MSErs as possible could visit this site and leave their details.

Thank you

How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Alas, it takes me to a page which says 'Beta Test'. I've tried searching for it and got hopeful, but was back at the Beta Test page before I knew it.
Does it definitely work in IE? I'm using an antiquated Mozilla browser here ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Just to add that my brother is a dentist who has finally given up on the nhs after many years, due purely to the new contract. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Done, NHS dentistry seems almost non-existent in Lincs.0

I wrote to my (Tory) MP on this issue as I now have to pay for dental insurance for myself and my fifteen year old son despite being on Child Tax Credit and qualifying for free prescriptions and free dental treatment. There have been no dentists taking on NHS patients in the surrounding 3 counties during the last 4 years, apart from one who had a queue round the block of applicants and was miles from here anyway. We have to travel ten miles to the nearest (private) dentist who would accept us (more local dentists were full up). We travel seventeen miles to the orthodontist, meaning that valuable school time is lost.
My MP was very sympathetic (not in power, blame the opposition) He did write to Rosie Winterton who wrote back claiming that hundreds more NHS patients are on the books here than the year before. Total lies, or she is confusing Herefordshire with Hertfordshire (not unusual). MP said he would keep me informed of progress but I have heard no more.
The total rubbish Ms Winterton was spouting about local dental provision was utterly useless to anyone needing urgent dental treatment. My elderly neighbour recently broke a tooth and, despite being on pension credit, had to fork out over £100 for private treatment! This government do not care about ordinary people and will not bat a collective eyelid at a petition. Perhaps if we all wrote to our MP's there might be more of a reaction. Quite a few want to win votes at the next election.0 -
I think anyone who has benefited from all the helpful advice Toothsmith has given over the last two years should sign the petition right now, and forward it on to their friends as well.0

That is a very good idea, and obviously, the more signatures the better.

Ive signed, we havnt got any NHS dentists in our area (that i know of) and the so called 'help site' lists local dentists, but i would guess they are all private, as they all say no new NHS patients!!!0
