Memory Foam or traditional mattress?

Options
I have been saving my £2. and £1. coins all year and have banked over £500. I really need a new bed as my base is a bit broken. I would love to buy one of the new memory foam beds - preferably with either an end drawer or two drawer option. It needs to be a double size.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth paying the extra for a memory foam and if anyone can recommend a bed it would be great. As its January - I wondered if there were any good sales on beds.

Any help or information greatly appreciated - thanks and Happy New Year to you all xx

I was having a similar dilema but in my case my mattress was still quite new but a little too firm, so I ordered a memory foam topper from QVC to take advantage of their 30 day no-quibble money back guarantee. It was my intention to try the memory foam out and then look into a full mattress once I'd tried it. Anyway, I liked the topper so much I kept it; and it only cost just over £100, much cheaper than a full mattress!
  • I got a recommendation from someone on here for IKEA beds as they are of very high quality and recommended by the chiroractic association (oh and very very cheap!!).

Am going to drive up to the Bristol branch and try them out soon!

I bought a new mattress a few months ago - got a real bargain from Bargaincrazy on a Slientnight one - less than £100 for a 5 foot mattress - but I wanted a memory foam one in reality. However, I found it cheaper to buy a topper from Ebay (I think it was about £120 for a 3inch one) - and to be honest, I'm glad I did.

This is the company I used: http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=chris.nj - very reliable and the foam was of superb quality (don't buy imported stuff - they use tonnes of nasty chemicals). By the way, I have no interest in this company at all - I just used them to buy my foam topper! 3 inches is better than 2 inches btw!!!!

Make sure you upack any foam mattress and leave it for a few days before you use it to get rid of the "foam smell" - otherwise you will be left with it for longer!!!!!

memory foam -huge vote for it here, our old mattress would cause back ache and now with the mf we have never once got out of bed in the mornings with any ache or pain, it is expensive but it is worth the investment and ours came with a 10 year replacement against damage etc so it is a future investment and a very comfortable one xxx

  • I'm looking for a hybrid...ie traditional 1000+ sprung mattress topped off with memory foam.

    Something like this....

I've read that memory foam can be a bit clammy in the summer (on the basis that it moulds around you & therefore makes you - erhmm - sweaty!).

I'm not seeing any *genuine* bed 'deals' anywhere though!

I bought a memory foam pillow from Argos on Sunday (£7.99) and it's a revelation. Once I found out which way to use it I got two great nights of sleep. If I had the money a memory foam mattress would be very tempting!
  • My daughter inherited a Tempur bed last year WOW! sheer luxury.
So bearing in mind the cost I bought an Ikea memory foam mattress for my son, but this was nothing like the real thing! So, saved hard, used shopbots from our fav website, managed to get price down (large single) from around £900 to £550ish. Result two kids who love their beds. On the odd ocassion I get to sleep in their beds, (we put my son's Tempur mattress onto his old pine base,Tempur themselves said this was fine) bliss! My answer to your question would be buy a cheap base and keep saving. Happy sleeping!

I have a silent night bed that has a memory foam part on the top of it. Kingsize, 4 drawer and was approx £600 I think...?

Edit: From Argos. Sorry, site was playing up last night and I was unable to edit.
