Hazelnuts?

Hi

I have searched the forum but the search facility hates me at the best of times:rolleyes: so forgive me if I have overlooked anyopnes most treasured recipie:o

I have been given a big bowl full of fresh hazlenuts from someones garden. Now, apart from eating them as plain nuts:rolleyes2, what can I do with them? The only thing I can think of is a variation of pecan pie (which might be nice:think:), anyone got any stunning hazlenut ideas, pref which can be frozen & I can wow people with around Xmas?:D

Thanks:wave:

  • We have a lot too. We have been dry roasting them and skinning them[it just rubs off] then grinding them down. They are wonderful sprinkled on our glut of plums ,added to biscuit dough or anything else you would add nuts too.The only downside is you end up with sore hands from shelling enough nuts to make it worthwhile.

Dip them into melted chocolate and leave to set on a baking tray. Mmm homemade whole nut chocolate.

  • Blimey hazelnuts can grow in this country, I never knew that. I always assumed that nuts were imported. What other sorts of nuts can be grown in blighty and is it as simply as planting the required tree?

Walnut trees grow, I know this beause Hubby grows them all the time from planting whole nuts:rolleyes: Our garden is the size of a postage stamp so then we have to find willing recipients for them...be warned however, they are very very very slow growing!:p

Sweet chestnuts and cobnuts grow in the UK as well; again, chestnut trees are big so won't fruit for years.
  • Squirrels around here get the best pickings from the trees in and around our Garden...I don't mind to much though..............except we had an abundance of acorns last winter and now have just so many oaks trees growing in the wrong places...anyone for acorn pie/choccie.......
  • You can fold hazelnuts into meringues .Just chop them up small and add with the sugar. The hedgerows round here are covered in hazelnuts my DH brings home pockets full every time he goes for a walk
