If you want to keep them for longer (they will last to Christmas) they should be removed from the husk and stored in a ventilated container in a cool dark place.
I'll add your post to the thread that zippychick mentioned as your question may help others.

This is where I appear a bit silly. Are there fresh and dried out hazelnuts? Sorry, genuinely don't know - I was talking about dried out like you buy in the shops. Never occured it would be different if they were fresh.:o
Never encountered moist ones. Need to learn more stuff, so this is good!A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

You don't appear silly! Hazelnuts (sometimes known as cob nuts) grow on trees and are ready for picking about now. I know a great tree for picking locally if you're interested.

'Twas suggested by a kind poster on greenfingered board I put this here for more replies, so here goes -
I have a huge pile of filberts/cobnuts/hazelnuts - call them what you will - in my garden, dropped from an overhanging tree in the disused orchard beyong the wall, with still plenty more reachable fruit on the tree Other than eating them as they are, are there any recipes I could use them in? It's free food and would hate to see them go to waste.

Oh wow, strawbz, just skimmed through the recipes and found cauliflower with hazelnut sauce - can't wait to try it! Thank you very much for the link, will spend a peaceful hour this afternoon looking at it0 -
lol, funnily enough that was the first recipe I was drawn to. I love cauliflower soup so may have to try that one myself too0

Thanks from me too Strawbz. My parents have a tree in their garden that has been loaded with hazelnuts this year and I am already a little fed up with baking and eating Hazelnut cookies. My Dad is retired now and has time to sit and crack them open for me!
The soup does sound like a good idea.0 -

How about this: Carrot and Hazelnut Roast Serves 4.
Ingredients
100g-150g hazelnuts
2 slices bread
1 onion quartered
2 large carrots cut into chunks
2 teaspoons mixed herbs
2 eggs beaten
1 tablespoon soy sauce.
Method- Preheat the oven to 180C.
- In a foodprocessor, whiz together the onion, bread, hazelnuts and carrots until chopped fine (not puree). Add the mixed herbs, soy sauce and eggs. Whiz until blended.
- Turn into a lined loaf pan and bake for around 50 minutes.
- Serve with roasted veggies and gravy, like you would any other roast.
