Which router?

OK everyone, I am sooo simple when it comes to techie stuff so I have a simple question, I am looking to buy a router and don't know which one to get.

Which is the fastest and best one to get? I have a windows 7 laptop and a windows xp pc, does this matter when it comes to buying a router?

Again, sorry for the simplicity.

  • I have just been searching on the net and have found this to be quite good and a reasonable price?

Netgear DGN2000 Wireless-N Router with Built-in DSL Modem

Is it any good? It's at £68.13

Also, which brand would be better, belkin or netgear?

Do you want a router, or a router with modem like the one you have linked to?

The belkin client software is abysmal in my personal experience; they do offer a life-time warranty which they also do honor (to be fair to them) but I'd probably choose Netgear over Belkin. Cisco/Linksys make some quite nice wireless routers too
  • Thanks for replying and is it better to get a modem built in to the router? rather than having just a router?

Well it depends what you need. It is pointless getting one with a modem if it is for cable broadband for example.

My own experience just the opposite strangely! Had a lot of problems with my Netgear router so a friend, who's an IT manager with Fujitsu, gave me a Belkin and I've had no further problems
  • ok I already have a talk talk modem which is about 4 years old - will this mean that it will work with the router?

If you on cable woith VirginMedia you just need a router. You then connect the Virgin media modem to the router and the router to the PC.

If you are on ASDL you could do the same but most people buy a modem router which just replaces the existing modem.

Have you tried calling your ISP to see if they do free routers? Many ISP's do.

Other than that Netgear are generally pretty good. Linksys and D-Link are also decent brands. I've had limited experience with Belkin but the experience I have had wasn't particularly good. Not so much problems with the hardware but the software on the router was more tricky to configure than others I've used. That wass a couple fo years ago though.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Well, provided you require an adsl modem (and not cable), then I personally always think it makes sense to purchase a wireless router with built-in adsl modem. I know others would disagree and trump the 'flexibility' of separate devices...but for me I do prefer built-in, yes.

    HTH.

Lol, no I agree with you; what does not work for one will work work for another. Routers are a bit like that IME. And the Belkin life-time warranty is always a plus
