I will be setting up my first web site in the next couple of months but am confused by the plethora of web hosting sites and what exactly I need. I have been told by a friend that some of the “top 10” review sites are biased which adds to the confusion. Has anyone any recommendations on where best to go for advice and the sort of things I need to consider, or what you can recommend from your own experiences. The web site will be reasonably basic and my initial budget isnt great so im really looking for something cheap that does the job.
All suggestions appreciated.
thanks

It's devoted to all stuff for web hosters like I will be and people already doing it
There are reviews of plenty of companies regarding their company support, their servers, their pricing etc
DON'T choose a package that offers unlimited everything unless they're well rated by other members. They're oversellers and usually disappearOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

The top tens are very biased. It's quite shocking that in this day and age there isn't a decent database of hosting companies out there.
Good rules of thumb are that (1) you get what you pay for. And (2) see rule (1)
I've used Namesco (used to have a good rep, but don't now) Hostpapa and Zen.
In my opinion, Zen are unrivalled in the uk. Excellent UK based customer service and fairly decent online supportMarketing and web design guy. FIRE enthusiast.0 -
Really depends on your requirements and more importantly the level of support they offer. There are other factors such as domain location ie .com, .co.uk etc.
If your intended visitors are from UK then try find a UK based server because the visitors will not have to cross the pond to see your site therefore normally faster resolve times.Computers are like me, I get up in the morning and work...until I stop.0 -
Webdesignforum.co.uk is probably a better forum to ask the question.
Mostly local boys (& girls), who are doing much the same as yourself.
A lot of rookies in there too, so the question is being asked every week..
an dthe answers there may be more targeted.0 -

Is the url not webdesignerforum.co.uk ?
Anyway, I prefer webhosting talk. That site focuses on all aspects, server builds, colocation, reviews, datacentres, everything about webhosting you need to know and answers lots of questions for nubbehs
The forum you have mentioned is useful, but focuses more on web designers as opposed to web hostingOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

No, website as stated.
The op has seems to have limited knowledge of this type of stuff and
is best talking among people who have been through same experience.
The op's setting up a website, not a web server.0 -
The URL you posted does not work for me, besides WHT doesn't just post things related to servers. There are sections for Web Design too

.Netmag's forum is quite good for any kind of web design & hosting adviceA straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.0
