Tesco taking payment 3 months late - WARNING

Just had a great start to my Weds by checking my online banking and seeing 2 payments to Tescos when I've not been into the store in about a week. Had a near panic attack thinking my card has been cloned (again!).
Called my bank who said that these 2 payments will incur bank charges because they pushed me over my overdraft limit but they are correct and have come in 3 months late! I made this payment on the 24th of October and the money has only just been taken by Tescos. Halifax said there was nothing they could do but advised me to call Tesco customer services, which I did. Apparently this is an issue that Tesco 'are looking into' because it's a recurring issue with them not taking the money until much later than you made payment.
Just wanted to make you all aware and just tell you to check your bank statements, I know this is something that I should keep an eye on and I am scrupulous with my statements, but food that I purchased 3 months ago has understandably slipped my mind! The last thing you need the week before Christmas is A) thinking your card has been cloned or
finding out it's not been cloned but you are about to be whacked with a £30 bank charge!

Don't you people ever check your bank statements? You should have noticed that you hadn't been charged back in October. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0

This is a tricky one.. In theory if you have made a purchase you should make sure that there is enough money/credit in your account to cover that purchase. I do no think there is any time limit when the retailer can charge you that purchase. In the past, I've had money taken from my account for a purchase after 9 months ( I was unlucky I thought they had forgotten about the purchase!).
To your bank it is just another transaction so they would not care but I suggest you write to Tesco to ask for an explanation. Then forward this Tesco letter to your bank and they might consider that it is not fair to apply a charge for this.0 -

I started this post to warn other people to check their statements as at this stage I'm not sure whether I have been charged twice or just charged really really late. I didn't come here to be abused! I do check my statements, but funnily enough £4 of shopping did not stick in my mind.
After speaking to Tesco they are going to look into it, I think they'll probably offer me something in response to the charges. If anyone else has had this problem do give them a call.0 -
Unfortunately the payment/s can be taken up to 6 years after the original purchase.
My friend found this out he hard way. Bought petrol each week for so many months from an Asda petrol station, 5 months later about £500 was debited!:eek:0 -
Same with mine this morning rang my nank and it was a £10 purchase on oct the 24th at my local tescos store. Glad it was nothing sinister but also a bit miffed. No bank charges here thankfully. Odd it is a country wide thing not a local issue.0

Sorry that happened to you sammylou and I think it was kind of you to warn others and remind us to be extra vigilent, especially at this time of year. Have to say it happened to me with £50 of purchases made at Boots. Was busy caring
for ill relatives as well as my 2 children and sorting xmas out and that reciept slipped through the net.Was charged 9 months later! Was a bit of a shocker to find money taken out so late but I know now to try to be extra careful.;):hello: SHARING THE LOVE (OF A BARGAIN) x0 -
i think the banks are partially to blame here, i am actually not to bad at managing my money. but SIL used to have a debit card and was forever going overdrawn, and obviously incurring charges. Surely they can stop people spending on them when they know there are pending payments that will take them overdrawn. She now has a pre pay card, which is much better for her
when i was child my mum and dad would write down every transaction in there cheque book, and make sure it all added up, it was like double entry booking, and very merticulous. if he couldn't work out where every penny was he was very upset. stopped him ever going ovedrawn though0 -
We've just found out the same, gone to purchase some bits and found that we are 50overdrawn. Phoned the bank to find out what on earth was going on only to be told tesco's had taken a payment from the 24th october for £125. Yes we should have made sure the money had gone out on the day, i agree it is partly our fault, however we only use that account for bills and online shopping and always make sure we have enough money in the account before ordering anything. Stupidly we rarely check bank statments for this account
so, as far as i was concerned the money went out on the day of delievery....not 2 months later, now leaving us not only £125 down for xmas but £40 lighter in sodding bank charges. I am on the phone to tescos now and they cant find any orders from that time so we are now wondering if the card has been cloned. Thanks for this thread Sammylou. I'll let you know how i get on and what they have to say. x
