Cats!!!!!

Options
Hi!
Am quite new to the forums - but have been reading some great tips and hope you may have some advice for me......

I've got 2 cats - both are indoor (necessary, unfortunately) and it's come to that time of year where they are losing the winter fur and shedding hair everywhere. One of them in particular seems to walk around in a cloud of floating hair all through the year!

I don't have time to clean and vacuum every single day, but even the day after a clean up we're almost back to square 1, tumbleweeds of cat hair floating down the hall, etc etc.

To make matters worse my OH is severly allergic. He lives abroad and for when he comes to stay I've kept one small room cat-free (I've quite a small flat and the cats would go nuts if I really restricted them - it's the only space they've got).

We refer to this room as OH's "prison cell"!! He even feels the cat allergy in this room (the cats never go in there) and really gets bad outside of the room after a few minutes. It's quite hard to think of nice things to do outside of the house that don't cost loads of money - we've been visiting cat-free friends, going on walks, going to (cheap) local.

Anyway, he's coming over on Thursday and I'm embarking today on my cleaning mission. Does anyone have any experience of this problem and any advice???
OH says it helps to clean a couple of days in advance as cleaning really stirs up the hair and dust.

Hope you can help, Thanks!!! :)

    Has he tried antihistamines?

It may help if you brush them more often.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
  • He takes anithistimines all the time when he's here and they help a little bit.

One of the cats hates to be brushed - I've tried a couple of different brushes but maybe I should look for a different kind.

The hairy one loves to be brushed - you could brush her all day and still the hair keeps a comin!

One friend said things improved for him when he got a dyson, but this is slightly outside my budget!!

I had two gorgeous young cats, brothers. They were mostly kept outside in stables and with indoor access to an annexe at night. No problem with my DHs asthma as the main house was cat free.

We moved and we rented. The cats were kept full time inside. By day 2 I caught my DH hardly able to breathe with his asthma. He had been trying to hide it from me. There was no option for me. I took the cats to be re-homed that very day. There was no contest as far as I was concerned and my DH came first

In case you are wondering, the kitties were adopted on a first view. They were truly lovely and so affectionate but I married my DH for better or for worse, 35 years ago
  • To groom the cat who doesn't like being brushed wear a pair of rubber gloves and stroke him. It make it easier to collect the hair.

People rehome Dysons. Ask around people who do house clearances or secondhand houseld goods shops. The early models were good.

my daughters oh is allergic to cats but she bought a liquid to wipe on the cats fur and it made a great difference cant remember the name they are off shopping just now will ask when they come back, it was to stop oh getting a reaction to the cat
  • I do agree - OH comes first.
I currently share a flat with one other person and the non-hairy cat more belongs to him (or chose him!)
The fur-ball hangs out with me the most - she was rescued and has had a hard life so I really want to find a good home for her and have put the word out amongst friends and family.

Me and OH plan to move in together at some point (when we've sorted jobs and finances) and then my flatmate will take non-hairy cat when I move out.

OH lives abroad and I visit him more than he comes here (cats are one of the reasons) - he's here 4/5 days per month.

I really don't want to take my furball back to battersea (it would be her 3rd time!) - I feel responsible for finding a home for her myself.
