Have been a Sky customer for over 10 years and have tried numerous times to get Sky+ for £49/Free to no avail. I followed the OP's advice this morning and am having it installed on Tuesday, free new box and free installation. :T

I just called Sky and told them I wanted to cancel because my Sky box is playing up (which is true), and the subscription is too expensive. They gave me a Sky + box for free (although £30 installation charge) and 20% off my bill for the next 9 months (which will save me £37.80) :j0

ooo - that sounds great!
I am too nervous to do it- we actually want a sky+ in another room upstairs, (stop all the shouting and arguing between the darling cherubs)
but not sure what to complain about - apart from the obvious cost!!
any ideas please?
thank you

There was absolutely no shouting etc be friendly. Reason? Virgin have phoned and offered it free, explain that they are targeting your area, cost etc. If you fail, ring back later as you'll probably get a different operator and it is def WHO you get. Good luck!0

It does work. I did this a few months ago after reading tips on MSE and got a free box and £15 installation. Brilliant!
I was just honest with them (needing to tighten my wallet after a period of illness; work involves travel, so don't always get to see my favourite programmes; and had received mailers from BT re their home hub). Plus I said my existing box was playing up, which it was.
Make sure you're polite and you're more likely to get a better deal.
Also don't feel you have to go ahead and cancel to save face if they say no. I just said I wanted to talk to them cos I was thinking of cancelling. If they'd said no, I would have just said: ok, I'll think about it and come back to you. Can't be doing with missing the finales of Lost and 24 at the moment!!!
As others have said, leave it a few days and try again. Martin's article on this seems to suggest Tuesdays are a good day to ring, I believe.
Good luck, it's about time they passed some of these deals onto existing customers as well as new ones!! :rolleyes:Big thanks to Martin Lewis for helping us start to sort out our finances!!!:A
Best Comp win:X-Box 360!!
And thank you to all posters! You're wonderful!0 -
Im soo happy, i just treid it. i rang them up and asked to cancel and once they realised that i was a customer for over 9 years they were desperate to keep me. and as i only had the normal Sky box i asked for un upgrade to sky plus and after some negotiating the customer service guy offered a Sky plus box for Free, and all i have to pay is the £30 instilation fee.
I am more then happy with the result, thanks every one and for anyone else looking to do the same, Good Luck0 -
I have also just called them and said my box was old and I had looked into Virgin media that was chepaer only without sky Sports channels, with free install etc, but that I had no money to pay for a replacement box. The guy offered me a FREE UPGRADE to Sky Plus box and all I have paid is £30 install. Excellent - well worth a call! Not won a thing ....yet!!0
