Hi, yes you need a passport to go to France, they will check it before you can board a ferry. You should also get travel insurance.

Technically no, but you need one to get back into England.0

Seeing as no one else has made the distinction I will... Having a passport is necessary; insurance is not compulsory, but is recommended.
If we had passport-based ID cards like the rest of Europe this wouldn't be an issue.0 -

It would because you would then additionally need a passport to travel out of the Eurozone.0 -

The 'eurozone' refers to the currency union; I was thinking more of the EEA as a travel union.
The OP asked about a ferry to France, not a trip to Turkey.
Most people travel mostly in the EU/EEA, and I for one would *love* to have a credit card-sized passport to avoid the need to destroy my red one any more by carrying it around everywhere with me.0 -

You wouldnt get out of the Port of Hull to Europe without a passport. You have to show it at check in and also on the walkway on to the boat.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
