This is what happens when people ignore the regulations that I work on. The savings in human life and structural damage easily covers my salary 1000 times at least. If you want civil service cutbacks, be careful what you wish for. BTW, this is just one area that I work on - I do not work specifically on fireworks.

What's this got to do with regulations?

I don't specifically on fireworks. Fireworks are actually banned in the Republic of Ireland.
Amusingly, many warehouses would need to be staffed by Chemistry PhDs without some of the other regulations I deal with, unless you wanted a lot of very nasty accidents. What cost would that be to industry?Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0

Oh Sir Humphrey, I did thank your post and acknowledge that you worked on something other than fireworks. Have you got the pip with me?
Warehouses being staffed by chemeistry PhDs would presumbly be a cost to the private sector though, and paid for via spending pattern, not public funding, so I can see an argument for that. As for costs in education, it might ut some more funding into science education, encouraging more young people to read chemsitry and get sponsered by future employers to do so, like professianal qualifications often are. Please not I am debating with you, not picking a fight. 0 0

Sorry, I read too quickly. My firewall prevents me giving thanks, or viewing who has given me thanks, so sorry if I appeared rude. There would be lots of other costs to business too, and I doubt that many companies could afford to employ a Chemistry PhD at each warehouse. Any extra costs would end up being passed on to customers. The PhD would need to be quite an all rounder, whereas we can consolidate the expertise of many specialists into our regulations.Politics is not the art of the possible. Don't even try to selectively quote sunshine.Prosecutors conceded that blame for the accident was shared between de Vries, the town of Enschede which failed to control the licences and the owners of the factory who did not enforce safety standards. If the regs had been followed, the fire would not have killed 23 people. Politics is not the art of the possible. So if they had a licence and regs, de Vries couldn't have set fire to the factory? If someone wants to set fire to something, regulations are going to make little difference."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0
