Laura's K.I.S.S DFW diary

Options
This is my new diary for the new year. Maybe I'll set up a link to the old one but it's not very interesting...:D I even managed to go backwards since my LBM last march. DUH!!

Anyway, I've recently realised some of the reasons I've been struggling to keep a track of things is that I have been over complicating things. Trying to do too many things at once.

So this is my Keep It Simple, Stupid! Debt Free Wannabe diary.

(C'mon, how many of you looked at this to see what K.I.S.S meant?!:p )

My simple plan is:
  1. Keep a track of all my incomings and outgoings
  2. Make at least one overpayment to a debt per month
  3. Always think 'do I NEED this, or WANT this?' before I buy anything.
  4. Always look for a cheaper option.
So there, how simple is that?

I am also going to forgo 'challenges' for the foreseeable future. All part of my keeping it simple plan. So if I've signed up to one of your challenges- sorry- I'm bailing out until I can get my head straight!

SOA looks good, although your buildings and contents looks quite high.

Asda had 24 packs of Whiskas for £4 the other week - the pouches. Our cats like it too....

Harold eats tins (though not supermeat!). He gets pouches as an occasional treat as he loves these! :D

£22.64 for buildings and contents is high? I don't really know as we just took out what our mortgage adviser person told us... I guess they may have been 'in league' with Norwich Union. :)

Anyone got any cheaper examples? We are only 27 and 28 (25 and 26 when we took out the policy) does age affect the deal?

If you're paying £22.64 then the total cost is over £45 per month as you said that the ones in green your other half is paying the other half of the cost for.

I have a two bedroom flat and pay £16 per month for B&C. I don't have accidental damage cover etc as my insurer won't give it to me as I rent a room out, but if I did it would be about £20. Depending how big your house is and age etc, you should still find it cheaper elsewhere.

Just renewed my buildings & contents - used price comparison sites - cost £132 forthe year and am looking forward to cashback from quidco in a few months time!
Age shouldn't matter, but location and previous claims will.

Wow, seems like we could save loads... I'll look into that! :)
  • Hi laura,
just wanted to say that when me and my fella got a house, we too got all the insurances that our mortgage advisor advised us on as we really didnt have a clue. Found we were paying over the odds on it all!!!! My buildings and contents insurance (3 bed semi) without accidental damage was just over £100. Try the comparison sites and others i.e direct line who dont use them then check the cashback sites i.e quidco and topcashback to see if your cheapest gives cashback. same with your life insurance, i have just got mine down to £22 a month for both me and my fella (i know everyones wont be this) using comparison sites.

also your phone line and broadband costs seem high at £30 or so a month. dont know if you are tyed into a contract but would look at reducing this. Have you tried getting the lowest tariff and using the override numbers??

    good luck with it all!
