Help, Baby managed to dismantle her cot!! Complain??

Posted this in the parent club but thought it would be seen better hear......
Im really, really annoyed  sorry its long....

My daughter is 10 months old but still in our room as im just not ready to move her yet. We live in a newbuild so the rooms are quite small, we bought her a very small and cheap cot for our room and a much better cotbed for her own room, both from Mothercare.

Woke up this morning as usual to her making noises in her cot, my husband (had to say that, only been married 2 weeks!) looked over at her first, muttered something like "jesus" and dashed over to her. Obviously i jumped up in a panic wondering what was happening and there she was sitting with both legs swinging through the bars, HOLDING AND BANGING ONE OF THE BARS

Each morning she is usually standing up and the only thing i can think of is that whilst trying to stand up she has pulled out a bar. Looking at the cot now there are 2 more bars that look like they are loose and not in properly.

In my mind, no matter how strong your baby is, this really shouldnt happen. She could of done herself a injury swinging that around especially if she were in her own room, she could of even got stuck, or even got herself through the bars

What would you do? write to Mothercare or take it further?

These are the cots i bought if im allowed to post links?:

EEK! Your heart must have been in your mouth! Glad your daughter's not come to any harm though.
I think your first contact has to be with Mothercare, to give them a chance to make good the situation-if you went direct to trading standards first I'm sure they'd refer you to Mothercare first.
More importantly, have you somewhere for her to sleep in the meantime? By this I mean a travel cot, or can you borrow a travel cot. A baby's cot isn't something you can really do without till you get it resolved is it!
    Good luck
  • Have just had a look at the product info on the cot you bought it says 'Conforms to BS EN 716' i would check just exactly what this is then you have something to go from. Not an expert at all but that's what i would use when approaching the company.
  • Im just really pleased we were right next to her and woke up straight away to the banging or else she really could of been hurt.

I have a cotbed (second link) in her bedroom but unfortunatly it wont fit in our room hence buying the smaller cot. I guess i will have to either 'fix' the smaller cot by glueing it back to together or put her in her own room tonight :o

Will look up the standard it conforms to a little later unless anyone knows off the top of their head? Although in my mind, a cot which the bars come out of does not conform to any kind of standard

Did the cot come already assembled?

  • The cot was flat packed but only involved using an allen key to put the sides and ends together - the bars were already together.

I would take photographs of the cot with the bars missing and immediately phone the customer services at mothercare.
Tell them you want an immediate refund or replace as you have nowhere for your baby to sleep in the meantime.
Keep your cool with them and explain how upsetting it was for you thinking of what may had happened if you hadn't been in the room.

I AGREE WITH THIS^^^^ i would also get her in her own room before she gets too big and you cant get her out of yours! she has a beautiful big cot bed in her own room and it seems to be going to waste!
What's for you won't go past you
  • Have taken some photos and am just uploading them now. I also have one of her in the cot with the bar, but she's laughing her head off so not really the best complaining photo

  • Hoping this photo will work? You should be able to make out the lighter tops of the other bars - this is where they are also loose and seemed to have dropped down although they dont push back in easily as the holes have dried up blobs of glue in them
