So Sygate is to be no more its been swallowed up by Symantec
but will it still be useful as I havent had an update for about a year now.

Kerio looks like its now only 30days then you have to buy (could be wrong though)

Zone Alarm, Its not something I would consider.
Edit Even though its good I dont like it. Preference I suppose.

So whats a good alternative.

And please dont even metion Snorton.

Any Ideas to freebies...

Firewalls don't usually update, I use Sygate on two desktops and recently installed an older version of kerio on my laptop. Version 2.14 is generally regarded as being the best, not as bloated as later versions, and it is still available for download, a google search for it will produce many hits.

So Sygate is still relevant then... As its probably Synmantec hype
thats saying it wont be much clout blah blah blah so people without
much Techie knowledge go to Symantecs products...

I don't think anyone's come up with significant improvements in Firewalls over the past few years. Perhaps with all the free ones being bought up someone will soon.

I don't think Aol have udated the version of Mcafee they give away since they started giving it out with broadband years ago.

So for simple terms Sygate is still very much relevant.

Sygate is still very relevant and always will be. As I said above I purposely installed an older version of kerio because that is less bloated, but it still does exactly the same task as the newest version, only quicker and a smaller install. Firewalls aren't like anti-virus, they don't need updating.

I thought so its just that reading Symantec's site you would almost believe
that its a scaremongering tactic to get people to go out and get one of their products or all hell would break loose.

    Thanks backflip

    From a recent List:

Sunbelt To Acquire The Kerio Personal Firewall

Here are some of the highlights:

    - The acquisition is expected to be finalized by the end of this month.
    - The Kerio Personal Firewall will be re-branded on an interim basis as the "Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall".
    - All existing customers of the Kerio Personal Firewall will be able to receive support through Sunbelt once the acquisition is completed.
    - Upon the close of the deal, Sunbelt will also announce new reduced pricing for the full version of the product and a variety of special offers for both Kerio and Sunbelt customers.
    - Additionally, Sunbelt will continue Kerio's tradition of providing a basic free version for home users.
    - During the transition period, Kerio will continue to support the product and users are encouraged to download the Kerio Personal Firewall from the Kerio website at https://www.kerio.com until the acquisition is completed.

    John

PS and ZoneLabs seem to have worked the bugs out of the version 6 firewall they produce, including the "free" version. I use this quite happily on one of my boxes.

PPS O Intel, if you "would not consider ZoneAlarm", why do you point to it as free software on your website?!

Mmm I do like Kerio but I find that it stalls a page for a second or so
whilst Sygate Zips through, mind you it could be a setting, I however
cannot get to grips with ZA for some reason I think its the interface
It reminds me of an attempt by a 8yr old with a Crayon trying to paint
    the Mona Lisa.

Thankyou for the input though
