Ebay to make free postage on DVDs Compulsory!

According to Tamebay, from early next year, Ebay UK are bringing in maximum postage charges with free postage compulsory on DVDs. They are starting with media & mobile phone categories but my guess this will be just the start. All DVD sellers will just put up the prices of the DVDs to compensate & this will generate more money for Ebay with the FVF!

  • playtrade does the same thing, but then the listing process of dvds and games is much quicker and easier.

Amazon have an inclusive price for purchases through their market place as well and as sellers you quickly learn how to set your sale price to take this into account. However runours of ebay going the same way have been around for a while and are usually dismissed as idle gossip, alhthogh I do think y may follow the Amazon model at some later date.

The thing is, eBay can not justify this in being an attempt "to improve the buying experience", as I am certain that every DVD seller will simply increase their prices to cover the cost.

Also, it will make it almost impossible to offer postal discounts if every item is listed with "free postage".

OK, so Play and HMV offer free postage, but they have the volume of sales to cover this, and also post from Guernsey so there is no VAT to pay.

This is one move that I honestly don't understand...

  • It will surely kill off auctions for DVDs. I'd want to make sure I'd get what I want for a DVD bearing in mind the increased FVFs caused by this & factoring in the postal costs.

if it puts a stop on greedy sellers trying to save fvf buy charging £5 to send a dvd second class, then i am in favour of this change, so good on ebay bring it on! I too am a seller, but just charge enough p&p to cover stamp and envelope, nothing more. I too will increase my sale price to cover p@p only, but what will the competitor do, because if he wants to put his price up on the same item by £5 to cover his postage, nobody will buy it.

Bright people look at the total price are are clever enough to realise that P&P is never actually free....

    There's only one winner here.

So here we have one buyer that has fallen for the eBay spin on the P&P policy.

Assuming you see a few DVD's offered by a seller A at £4.99 each inc postage.
You see the same DVD's offered by seller B at £2.99 + £2.00 P&P, but they offer a postal discount of £1 for each extra DVD on combined postage.

Do you decide to buy from the seller A at £19.96, or Seller B at £16.96?

Soon you will have no choice. It will increase the revenue for eBay, it will make the seller more profit, but it will have just cost you £3.00 more.

    Still think it's a good idea? No.. I didn't think so!!!!:rotfl:

Oh, I know this, but I honestly did not think that ebay could be so blatant about it, however after reading the post above it seems they were correct in assuming that many buyers would fall for it under the blind assumption that it was a benefit for them.
