Can i freeze cooked rice or will it break-down, go soggy and horrible when i defrost it?

I thought about making sure it was completely cool before putting it in a freezer bag and then freezing. However before i try i thought i'd as you MSEr's as i know someone will have tried this before me!!!

No points for guessing who misjudged the amount of rice she needed to cook tonight.....

  • Did you really really really misjudge it? I knew someone at university who had never cooked rice before, and filled the saucepan 3/4 of the way up with the stuff!

I don't know about freezing it, but whenever I have too much rice, I just put it in the fridge and fry it with a whisked egg and a few frozen peas and any other vegetables I have lying around. You have to be careful and make sure it's reheated properly though as rice can be a bit dodgy if not.

How much rice did you cook?!

We always freeze rice. I make meals for hubby to take to work and most have rice with. He's still alive.....
    I haven't got one!

I'm a disaster at judging the amount of rice I need. :o I've been freezing it for years and never suffered any ill effects. Just make sure it's piping hot before serving.

Just make sure you cool & freeze it quickly. Don't leave it lying around for too long.
  • That's a really clear link. Thanks. I've always been too scared of freezing it because of food poisoning. That makes me feel a bit more confident.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • When I did a bulk cook I rinsed the rice in cold water to cool it uquickly, drained it and froze it straight away. Don't "warm" it up-make sure it is piping hot when you reheat it. Ive been doing it this way for years.

like some of the other posters, I've been freezing rice for years with no ill effects :)

one thing to make sure of though, make sure it's well sealed or covered, it can dry out really badly otherwise
  • Tonight, I purposely boiled some-just to freeze. Its so handy, just getting out one portin]on at a time. Very very cheap up by the readycooked frozen/tinned or packet rice too. It should be a money/times saving habit, I think.

We've just had a chinese takeaway as a treat and there's still a full carton of fried rice left, do you think it will be okay to freeze it? I know you have to be careful with rice so I thought I'd ask first.

Having once had food poisoning from a chinese. (never found the culprit though I suspect it was the rice) I am really wary. Anything not eaten for that meal gets thrown away:cool:
