Update Note: 1 November Some people below have reported it's not working for them. Please reply to this thread to let us know, saying which phone provider you have. Thanks.

The following is a press relese from Pennyphone about Divali. It's a nice offer. Of course Pennyphone isn't always cheapest - please use the non-commercial www.moneysavingexpert.com/callchecker to check whether the special access number below does provide the cheapest price to the destination you're calling. Please make sure you use that one to get the 1p per minute and NOT the numbers on the callchecker

Like the other providers there you can access Pennyphone without an account and without changing phone provider

Dear Sir/Madam,

The most popular and most celebrated festival of India is coming soon. It is Diwali, the festival of lights. In such a time of joy and happiness, togetherness and blessings, pennyphone helps you get closer to your near and dear ones.

Hence, pennyphone is offering from the 31st October onwards calls to any landline or mobile in India for only 1p/min via the access number 0844 721 4 721. The special offer of 1p/min is also extended to many other destinations around the world where Diwali is celebrated:

Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Kenya, Australia, Nepal, Tanzania, Indonesian, Suriname, Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, Mauritius, Myanamar, Guyana and Fiji.

With best wishes for a Happy Diwali!

Quote from the International Call Checker

There is no need for an account with these providers; they can be accessed instantly. To do this, dial the special access number listed. This connects you to the provider's system and you are charged the fixed rate for making the call. Once connected, you simply dial the number you want to call. The initial fixed rate access call charge (ie the 1p or 2p or 7p/min listed) is all you pay. There is no further charge. These companies make their money by receiving a proportion of the income from the access calls.

  • From the website it just says from 31 October so I guess you need to keep an eye on the website to see when the offer is taken off.

  • Hello guys, I don't post much but thought I would fill you in a bit. Diwali is being celebrated on 2nd and 3rd November so the maximum time for this offer will probably be upto 4th or 5th of November. Could be more but that is my guess according to the days of Diwali.
  • Just tried it to call India and an announcement said 'this destination costs 7p per minute, please use access number 0871x...'

Anyone else had this problem? 1p a minute did sound too good to be true I must admit :(
  • Maybe because its not the 31st October yet icon12.gif
