As far as I am aware (unless legislation has changed recently) it is an offence for a supermarket to charge you for fresh yeast and this is exactly why it is given away. Being a live culture it cannot legally be sold on such a premises.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
I got mine from ASDA - FREE - They do bag it and barcode it, but the price is £0.00 - I suppose they have to manage the stock somehow?0

Fresh yeast definitely can be frozen. I have found that it goes a bit sloppy when defrosted so it is best to freeze in small quantities. It works fine after freezing. This space has been intentionally left blank0

freeze it in an ice-cub tray - keeps it in nice tidy chunks

My Asda (Oadby - Leicester) has started to charge 42p for 2 ounces of fresh yeast. When confronted them they were adamant the policy of free yeast had changed. Will need to send an email to Asda HQ to verify.0

Our local morrisons have always charged for fresh yeast as well.
Doesn't suprise me though judging by how tight they seem to be in other areas

The yeast might be free for tax reasons.
Food is zero rated for VAT, however, that only includes ‘food of a kind used for human consumption’ (or animal feeding stuffs).
I'm not sure if yeast could be classed as either, and thus the supermarkets that are selling the yeast should, in some cases, really be charging VAT on it.
This page on HM Revenue & Customs' website gives the various "food" items which are zero or standard rated - it's clear that yeast is a little bit of a tricky one and, in the end, seems to depend upon the eventual use of it.
Most traditional bakery products are zero rated - and so if the bakery mark the yeast as a bakery item and no VAT is paid on it - they could be inadvertently avoiding the tax due on the item.
Given its limited costs it's perhaps plausible that rather that charging VAT on it, it's given away for free to save the hassle.0 -
