Me and Mr Weezl were chatting earlier, and the thing we realise we miss/don't like now the garden is more productive than ornamental, is the amount of bare, brown earth you see. We used to have a riot of weeds, which, cos we're not purists just looked pretty to us! Greens and bright pinks everywhere.:T

Although I really like seeing the dwarf beans in rows with their canes, they look a bit 'allotmenty'. Erm, is there a way around this?

    It's probably a daft question :o:D.

Just a quick pop in.... can you not squeeze in more plants? I have a tiny garden and yes there is a little bit of bare earth to see but I have squeezed in plants as I tend to harvest some things smaller - such as turnips/beetroot so they don't need quite so much space. Also swiss chard with it's bright colourful stems look very pretty in the garden and what about rhubarb?

For the beans - what about wigwams instead of rows? or look for fancy support sticks or oblisks (this is probably more of a long term aim as these will cost a few pennies..) I have my beans growing up trellis on the fence this year..

just a few thoughts... hope it helps...

Thanks yategirl! :T:T:T:beer: Can I put other plants quite near the beans and mangetout then, without them getting choked?

Was thinking of you as I harvested the rocket, thinking, 'must tell her there's loads of wild rocket growing down by Bristol parkway station'! And on Harry Stoke lane you can harvest poppy seed heads, and also by the station, little fallen apples for chutney or bhajee.:D

Still planning whether that foraging walk is possible for us on the 22nd. We've found a place to stay the night, so it may just work!!!:D

    Love Weezl x

    WEEZL

You can grow veg in borders and some is ornamental like beans up an obelisk chard is really pretty especially this one some of the frilly lettuces would look good too like this one stawberrys and tumbling toms in baskets i also think potato flowers are quite pretty (but that might just be me;) )

Originally cottage gardens were a mixture of both

Re the topsoil :1 ton horse muck :1 ton salvaged soil 1 ton compost from garden centre, hoping the muck will have rotted down by spring as can burn some plants if not

CW18 i have made potato bread in machine will post recipe later along with the rice bread recipe (for leftover rice)

    Thanks -- you're a star :)

Leftover rice? Nope -- never have any of that  (Re: portion sizes as discussed on the last thread, I do 80g raw weight per person (same as I do for dried pasta), unless I'm cooking frozen peas and sweetcorn in with it -- in which case I drop to 75g, or even 70g if I'm running short on rice and money) In the rare event I don't serve up all I cook, the dogs are rather partial to it..... especially when it has peas/corn in

Good Morning Weezel........Whew!! Finally made it too the end of this thread!

I have learned soooooooooo much from it and my OH is shocked now when i go to the shops and no longer impulse buy and insist that we eat BEFORE we go shopping and that I no longer even buy some of the dressings and marinades etc unless they are very cheap. It really does make perfect sense and I have no excuse for buying them anyway as I think my homemade dressings, sauces and marinades all taste better anyway and cost pennies compared to pounds!

Well, now all i have to do is start reading the your first thread and then go back through this one and take out all the recipes as there have been some very nice sounding ones. I can see me getting very little work done with too much time here lol, but this is so much more interesting. Good thing I am a PA from home and not in an office!

Perhaps i will get brave and post a few recipes here as well. I have a great one for saurkraut, potatoes and leftover ham/gammon casserole, well we think it is great anyway lol.

Well just wanted to say hello and sort of introduce myself...I look forward to many hours of happy reading!!:j

    love and huggles

Now off to get washed and dressed, before heading out to check the local Whoopsies

  • I grow any veg in my garden Weezl and at the minute my beans are running up very nice wigawams. They look nice amongst the plants..courgettes are in pots, and a couple on the window ledge..our toms didn't do as well this year, had some blight which didn't clear up.
Our strawberries are very good, and salad plants are coming along nicely..garlic and spuds alsovery good..all in ornamental beds too..If that helps.

It all cost very little as i had a switch around of plants, and you will be very surprised at what you can fit in . We have a compost bin in the corner as well and hanging baskets..so garden very coulourful at the moment. If you have a local tip..i would head off there as folk always chucking out perfectly good gardening pots and hangers, i got two lovely wicker ones which have lasted me for ages. And a few tubs as well.

I currently have a big pot of saag aloo on the stove, finished cooking and just hoping it will cool enough so i can take it to work for my dinner! My whole house smells of curry right now! Must remember to cut a hunk of HM bread (artisan in 5 mins type) and a slice of weetabix cake to take with me too... (How proud of myself am I? Little steps - slowly but surely, everything i eat is becoming HM pretty much!) woo!
    On the up :D
