Take my advice and don't open an ISA with Barclays, even if their rate is the best. Their customer service is absolutely appalling and I am sick to death of them and frankly incandescent with rage.

The short version of my tale of woe is that I have been trying to withdraw my money from a Barclays ISA for over a month now. They initally spelt my name wrongly on the cheque and a month later I am still waiting for it to be re-issued. I am constantly promised that it will be sent, only it never happens. They don't call you back when they say they will and just bullsh1t you over and over again. I have spent a grand total of around 1 hour on the phone to them today (on an 0845 number!!), an hour on Monday and so on and so forth. To add insult to injury, my statement shows the money as having left my account on 4th March so it's no longer earning interest.

Barclays are a joke. They offer great interest rates to entice people in but don't have the resources to provide adequate customer care. Opening the ISA in the first place was a nightmare so if you want my advice, steer clear of these jokers!

cheers mate. to be honest, i am so sick of the whole thing, i might just leave my money in the savings account. i am a non-taxer at the mo anyway. i only wanted to open the ISA cos trying to sell my BTL property (ha, ha, ha) and so will be looking to put some of the proceeds (if I ever get any by time it sells) in another ISA for 08/09. They advertise instant access but like you say, not so instant! Can't they just pay it straight into your account?

Why is this country so useless at customer service? We're supposed to be a nation of binge drinkers but no one seems to be able to organise a p**s up in a brewery. Have you tried 'Say no to 0870' for alternative numbers for Barclays or tell them to ring you. Sometimes i ring the 0800 numbers and ask to be put through or sometimes they just say 'i'll put you through'. Or some websites have a ring back request.

Hope they finally get your name spelt right. What is it? Smith? (wouldn't surprise me!!)

Commiserations on the BTL! No they won't pay it into my account as my current account is with someone else. I'm STILL on the phone to them, about 1.5 hours so far. The girl's just told me it will go out on Monday despite being promised this Monday that it would go out within 48 hours, i.e. I should have received it today at the latest.

I feel bad for the poor girl in the call centre because I've just totally blown my top. I've worked in a call centre and I know how poo it is and I feel for her but I am absolutely sick to death of it. Every time I call I am promised time and time again the cheque is on the way but it never materialises. Apparently the latest delay is once again to due with my name. It's RuFino, they've spelt it RuSino. Yet they have managed to send me 1 cheque with the correct spelling as well as a statement so they're clearly just lying because they just don't want to send me MY money! I've asked time and time again for a direct dial number which they've refused to give me.

I looked for an alternative number but none seemed to get me through to the right team. Companies seem to be getting cannier at not letting you get through on normal geographic numbers.

hope you get it sorted. think i won't bother with the ISA now because i will soon be paying 2 mortgages and may need to get my hands on the cash quickly. a months wait is not acceptable! i know it may not be like that for me, but you still need to be able to trust yo can get your cash in a hurry.

reckon, you be better putting the money under your mattress, like the good ol' days.

    Good luck.
  • I knew u would come back on it. id love to know what u actually do at Abbey. :rotfl:

I believe that you commented last week on a Barclays ISA thread where someone had a 2007/08 ISA application incorrectly opened for tax year 2006/07, these mistakes occurred because barclays were opening 2006/07 ISA applications after the end of that tax year and backdating them.

    Fair point, had forgotten that.

Though don't quite like the way you said it (patronising). Actually thought people were ganging up on you for no reason in previous posts, but now can understand why people weren't being so nice.

Don't quite see what I do at Abbey being important and why you want to know.

Lets face the reality a lot of forum posters wouldnt get on in real life, being a Leeds fan i agree with the motto "nobody likes us who cares" so im not in the slightest way bothered what anybody on here thinks of me, after all most of us have never met and never will.

All I did was answer your question as u quoted my response, as uve previously posted that u work for Abbey I expressed suprise that u appeared to lack what should be for a "professional" like yourself basic awareness.

i.e Its "obvious" that if ISA accounts actually had to be actually opened by the end of the tax year then providers wouldnt be allowing people to submit applications right up to the last day in the tax year.

Your statements re the way Barclays deals with its ISA applications was breathtakingly infactual, im amazed how some people think they can just post anything which in some cases misleads some people who assume that people are posting facts.

Perhaps u are speaking for "Abbeys" internal post being unreliable. "Internal post" is not usually like "normal post" as large organisations normally use a courier service ( or had u "forgotten" that as well ), such post is only unreliable if the staff are unreliable.

Again here u was quoting another poster who was entirely correct, with what was a totally infactual response, so u firstly posted that infactual response and then u questioned my subsequent response.

It is true I was expecting u to question my subsequent response. ( which u did)

Even if post did get lost in between a Branch and Head office, most Branches log what they send to their head office which is precisely what Barclays branches are doing. ( or had you "forgotten" that as well :rolleyes2 )

Is there actually a nice way of telling somebody that they are wrong, I have seen some people post back with "thats rubbish", I could have posted back "thats rubbish" because it was a "rubbish" response. :rolleyes2

  • Again....... had no problem with what you said, just the way you said it. And if you look again at my post in page 1 I did add could be wrong.

If people ensured that what they were posting in a "savings and investments" forum was factually correct where facts are known especially when more than one poster had already posted factual answers then such problems wouldnt arise.

I didnt like the way i had to explain myself by being part quoted with a question, I always make sure of the facts before i post. ( where facts are known/available)

This is why MSE Martin doesnt want to have a seperate Investments sub forum, some people would be posting rubbish in there as well. :cheesy:

Now if u want the last word, u can have it. :rolleyes2
  • I'm sorry for all lot having problems opening your barclays isa.........think I may be the only one on here for whom it went smoothly.
opened in branch [ not a barclays existing customer] a couple of weeks ago, and got paperwork through yesterday, with a follow up telephone call from the girl who opened it, saying I can go into branch on monday with full £3500 cheque to pay in , as the account wont be given a number until 6th april.
will let you all know if the transaction works out ok on monday;)

Still no cheque!... Yet more promises of it being issued within "48 working hours". Of course I don't believe them but don't see what else I can do. Well a few ideas spring to mind, none of them legal and none I suspect would get me my money any faster. Does anyone know who the relevant body for me to complain to is? I've looked at the FSA website but it doesn't really seem relevant.
