Know this is a money saving site but, in my opinion, its worth the extra £5 or so for a Pioneer/NEC writer.

I've had bad experiences with cheap DVD writers, although they may be better now, the one I had cost £99.99, £10 cheaper than a Pioneer at the time and it was the worst thing I've ever bought. Got a Pioneer 110D now, cost £35 at the time and it is excellent.

So, in my opinion, cheap DVD writers? AVOID.

At Ebuyer atm, DVD-RAM as well as everything else.

I use this in one of my comps and it's a really quality drive, well worth 24 quid and the rest :)

Can just say that the Sony dvd drive that lowestontheweb were sellnig was the biggest pile of poo I have ever purchased - and I've got through a lot of drives

Way too noisey - like you could hear it from the other room, kept corrupting disks too

Ended up smashing mine up and getting the NEC drive from SVP - as I couldn't be bothered with the RMA procedures

Must agree with the above post. I had a SONY DQ28 (?) drive that decided to only recognise some disks then eventually decided to recognise none. When burning disks it was 50:50 whether i would get a coaster. A really poor drive. There seems to be a history of SONY drives doing this on the net.

Replaced this with a NEC 4570 which is superb. Very fast and no coasters.
  • In the interests of fairness I recently (last week) bought the Sony DVD writer (as originally posted by Bingsy above) and so far have been pleased with its performance. Got mine from Savastore mind, since it's only up the road from me.

I got two of the new Sonys a little while back, the latest one which also claims to support DVD-RAM.

Probably the worst drive ever, again chose to read discs sometimes and not to see them other times.

Thought it was ok once managed to get firmware updated but its still nowhere near as realiable as my panasonic or NEC.
  • I would recommend the Pioneer drives. I have a few and have bought them from a firm called burnmedia

they have a pioneer drive at the moment for £22.98 for a Pioneer DVR-111D 16x Dual Layer

    http://www.burn-media.co.uk/home.php?cat=644

this works out at £28.80 delivered.

    very good customer service
