The mail states that the new cards will be issued between June and September 2010 it also says if you have any further questions to go to nationwide.co.uk/cardchanges20

Not had any communication from Nationwide. Off to Spain this summer and according to the Nationwide website my country of choice is still free to use ATMSelect the country you are visiting from the list below, if it is listed as "no fee charged" you will not be charged. Otherwise you will be charged the fee. Please remember if you use your credit card to withdraw cash you will be charged a cash advance fee. Spain - No fee charged0

Full details here: http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/card-changes2.htm
Only appears to apply to customers whom they are issuing the new "cash card+". No idea what type of card this will be, or who will receive it, but sounds like a full auth Visa debit.0 -
Had me worried for a minute there - that web link seems to imply that the change affects cash cards and not existing debit cards (I was always surprised they allowed its use abroad anyway, and I see cash card + purchases abroad can still be made).0

I always assumed that was the rule for cash cards anyway, and it was just Visa cards that can be used.
Panic over... Benidorm here I comeBe happy, it's the greatest wealth0 -
Previously cash cards (purple/mastercard network) and debit cards (blue/visa network) could be used abroad to take money out of ATMs abroad.
Then Nationwide changed it so that the debit cards attracted a fee for withdrawals outside of Europe and the cash cards were still being free to use with the caveat that changes would be made to them in the future.
It now seems that the changes have been made and rather than introduce a charge they are just preventing them from being used at all. Shame really as it was handy to have one of each type of card as some ATMs seem to be 'fussy' when it comes to the debit card but accepted the cash card fine.
For those of you who have tried to upgrade from a cash to debit card online and been refused, often making a new application for a flex account work instead.0
