Are you making the custard with custard powder, sugar and milk? If so, I would just add some cocoa powder to the mix.

Pink custard - pink food colouring???
  • I make chocolate custard by using cornflour and drinking chocolate instead of custard powder, and I make pink custard by using cornflour instead of custard powder and adding some pink colouring - or if you can get it pearce Duff make blancmange powder in strawberry and chocolate flavours - really cheap and if you serve it hot is is pink custard and chocolate custard.

I am the same as jet,- find cocoa mixes in easier if mixed in with sugar and milk in a small cup first.
  • Definately put cocoa powder in with the custard powder and sugar, follow the instructions on the tin from there :D

Yes, I agree - either add cocoa powder instead of some of the custard powder, or substitute cornflour & cocoa for the custard.

One thing my lot used to like with chocolate sponge was sweet white sauce. They really loved that combination.

It must be in the air :D I made a couple of chocolate sponges lately and we got to talking how we (the adults) used to have different coloured/flavoured custards in those dim and distant days of "proper" school dinners. I used to especially adore the green mint custard with the choc sponge, but I will eat any type of custard/sauce :D

I knew there was something else to put on the shopping list - green food colouring and mint essence. I shall make a sweet white sauce and just add appropriate colours and flavours as needed.

Just a basic white sauce, but with sugar.
Butter or marge, flour or cornflour, sugar, milk. Make a roux as normal.
    It's that simple.
Sorry, can't think of proportions offhand, mainly cos I just bung things in and hope for the best! But often cornflour packets have recipes on the side, or any good basic recipe book should have it.

  • Maybe this subject is out there somewhere but I made the easiest Chocolate custard the other night.

    3 tablespoons of cornflour
    4/5 tablespoons of drinking chocolate ( a 1kg tin I'm getting through ;) )
1/2 to 1 pint of milk depending on how thick required.
6/8 chunks of dark chocolate. (or less if you want a less strong chocolate taste)

Put the cornflour and drinking choc in a pan and blend until smooth with some of the cold milk. Place on a low heat as you whisk in more milk as the sauce thickens to desired consistency...once there add as many of the chocolate chunks until you have the strength of flavour you like.

We like a thick custard and there was enough here to serve 4/6.

You can tweak this as much as you like with how chocolatey and how thick/thin you like it.
