saver_natalie wrote:So therefore I could get one of these 12months free deals, sell the phone (get about £30), get £20 from Quidco and just use the free mins, get my cashback and end up with about £50 profit altogether as long as I do the cashback right. So why don't more people do this?
I've kept 3 of the phones, (one of which was for my daughter,) but one I sold on Ebay (I only wanted the contract for my son as he already had a good phone) and have made good profit on that. I also go through quidco.com which then gives you an additional £25 - £30+ for taking out the contract.
As long as you stick exactly to the rules they set out regarding claiming your money, you should have no problems, although I would warn you to beware of OSPS, they can make life very difficult, though there are a few who have had no problem at all. And if you do take advantage of any of the good offers around, always send claims by some sort of registered/recorded delivery.Sexkitten

Yes this is genuine, you have to claim your cashback and it works like this:Get 12 months FREE line rental when you connect to this deal. FREE Line Rental for 12 months. This can be redeemed as Cash Back vouchers to your bank account in 4 stages. £105.00 at months 5, 7, 9 and 12. Full claim details are included when you receive your order.

Ive just taken the plunge  My first contract phone :j Im guessing I have to cancel the insurance by sending them a recorded delivery letter before 24/03/2006 ? Don't really want to pay them £5.99 per month"There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children; one of these is roots, the other wings" - Hodding Carter

Because it requires you to be very organised and have £105 to freeze for up to 4 months. The reason why shops offer these deals is because at least 70% of the people will be chronically unable to keep track of the offer - keep paying £XX via direct debit, send every third bill to shop with the voucher they sent you with your phone, make sure you send it no later than 90 days after it arrives, wait up to 90 days for the cheque while sending another form and bill in the meantime. Some retailers need to be reminded, refund has to be chased up. And, of course, don't forget to jump plans (and operators, unless you want to loose your number) right after 12 months.
The idea behind such deals is to attract you to a deal on as high priceplan as possible. That's why they usually have better deals on £35 price plans than on £25 price plans. And then they hope you'll forget to send form for cashback or stay with network longer than a year.
From money saver point of view, as long as you have £35 a month to freeze, it can be rewarding. From a typical mobile user point of view however it can be quite a hussle.
Just as a note - someone mentioned buying multiple contracts - I don't think selling contract phone before minimum contract period ends is actually legal.0 -
You are completely within rights to sell a contract phone providing you continue to pay the line rental for the minimum term of the contract, failure to pay would result in the handset being barred0

Thanks charlotte3 and v0n.
I suppose all what you've said makes sense. I'd best not do multiple deals yet as I'd best check I'm organised myself enough to send cashback forms in at the right time. Although I did consider getting two contracts - the phone I want on the cheapest contract I could find, and the contract (ie. mins) I want as a 12-month freebie then give that phone away. Would this work?0 -

1: They are either both with the same network provider or
2: The phone you wish to keep can be unlocked (you can probably find this out on this, the mobile phones board)
Please also note that a 3g sim card will probably not work in a 2g phone. So if you got a contract with 3, and wanted to sell the phone, you would probably need to have an alternative 3g handset to use it
Also please do read the small print with the contract. They all differ in the amount of time they give you to send in your claim. Some will say 30 days from the date on the relevant bill, others may be more generous.
You can cancel the insurance anytime. You don't have to wait until the free period ends. There may well be a phone number you can ring to do this rather than write a letter but again read carefully.Sexkitten

I just spotted another phone has appeared on 12 months free/12 month contract on Mobileshop.com (sure it wasn't there earlier in the week as I have been checking)
Nokia 6030
o2 250 +100 texts - £35/month
Double minutes/texts for 3 months
12 months cash backGet 12 months FREE line rental when you connect to this deal. FREE Line Rental for 12 months. This can be redeemed as Cash Back vouchers to your bank account in 4 stages. £105.00 at months 5, 7, 9 and 12. Full claim details are included when you receive your order.
See: http://www.mobileshop.com/mobile-phones/o2/contract-mobile-phones/nokia-6030.php/PNEWO260300004
Quidco offer £25 at the moment, plus if you don't need the phone, Mobileshop sell this phone off-contract at £109.99 (http://www.mobileshop.com/mobile-phones/sim-free/simfree-mobiles.php/nokia/6030 ), therefore must be some money to recover if you wanted to sell. At Expansys off-contract the Nokia 3120 sells for £76.95 http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=115855&partner=register), as does the 6030 (http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=121017). On ebay, the 6030 appears to be selling for around £50, the 3120 slightly less.

12m free - 12m contract.

Don't really need any fancy features as I tend to only text and ring occassionally these days. Also, some of the other models seem so flimsyI think I also saved myself a £10 fee as I rang O2 to port my # rather than use the paid for service from mobileshop :j Phone should be here today, also got a free Siemens A65 from my soon to be ex Virgin acc so that was nice, that should be here today with £10 credit :j :j
