Hi all, went into Barclays today to open an ISA. Talk about the Spanish Inquisition!!! I have never been asked so many questions about every aspect of my life and income and "outcome", they practically wanted to know what pension plan I had set up for my dog! Anway I was also "forced" to open a current account with them. I have an account at another bank. I hope it was worth it, they know more about me now than anybody else on this earth!!!!!
i went today after work and that pretty much sums up my experience!!
i was adamant i wouldn't give any information that didn't seem necessary (salary, living arrangements etc.) and wouldn't be talked into having any other products........but i caved in rather easily!!!
i was told it was better to have a current account so if i needed access to the ISA money it would make life easier etc. said i didn't want one but then told there was some problem with the old system and new system (they're currently moving over to??) and that the only way she could process my ISA today was to open a current account?!!?......yeah whatever!!....but otherwise i'd have to come back next week. couldn't be bothered with that so got reeled in!!
made it clear i wouldn't be moving my salary to it though!!
just hope it's a 'free' account and not one with a monthly fee?!?!
she input all the info off the print-out i took in.
was asked about salary, name of employer, length of service, monthly outgoings etc. etc.!!!
took about 20-30mins....i just wanted to get out of there!!
wont use the current account but if that what it takes to open the ISA then not too bad i guess?!?!
does anyone know if they'll pay interest from 1st day of new tax year or not until funds are cleared??0 -

Are there any strict conditions for having their basic bank account (eg requirement to pay salary in)? Barclays was my first bank but I ditched them a few years ago and am now thinking it might be useful to have a current account just for the Internet banking.ukdutypaid wrote:Suzey. I caught the item on Rad 4... Barclay's were going to put somebody on and then they changed their mind. The item was saying it's been chaos. Victim of their own success etc... No profit to be made though. Loss leader... Marketing data harvesting, or other products.. It doesn't seem that many of us have been sold to, so it is the insane Auto opt in on the application form, perhaps...?
Yeah, if my account ever gets opened I'll be interested to see how much they try to sell me. The girl didn't ask me any questions in-branch (I was a bit disappointed!!!).ukdutypaid wrote:Should be on the beeb site for 7 days....
Thanks for the tip!

I posted my application off for this ISA (07/08 tax year) about 2 weeks ago.
They have not yet taken the funds (paid by cheque), and I am an existing barclays customer so provided them no extra ID.
Is anyone else in the same position as me still waiting? Has anyone had their 07/08 account opened yet?
What, in peoples experience, was the turn around time between posting the application and getting some form of confirmation of receipt (beit funds taken, or reply letter)?
Thanks.
Edit: I see people are still waiting to hear about their 06/07 allowance... so no doubt they are getting priority. Think I'll call them next week if I hear nothing. Must be patient...0 -
as long as we get interest back dated to 6th April.........0

Just to let everyone know that I have had a very positive experience so far.....(and no, I don't work for Barclays!!). I had been expecting it to be awful from reading the comments so far on here.
I went in at 9.45 this morning to my local Barclays (Wimbledon) and was out by 9.55! I am not an existing Barclays customer but was not asked any questions at all apart from if they had spelt my name correctly when inputting it on the computer. I took in a completed application form, a cheque for 3000 quid and my passport and driving licence as proof of indentity. He mentioned to me about offshore bank accounts which I am apparently eligible for because I am of Indian origin (?!), but certainly didn't try to force me to open a bank account with them or sell me any other Barclays products.
However he said not to expect the application to be processed immediately or my cheque to have cleared for 7-10 days. I guess that's the only downside, but actually quite reasonable considering the back holiday.
Let's see if it actually takes longer than that.....!0 -

My Barclays Cash Beating ISA appeared in my list of accounts when I went online yesterday. So it looks like it can be managed online.
Haven't recieved any paperwork from Barclays though !!
The same happened to me ... I have a Barclays current account and it appeared along with my other Barclays account. However, as to being able to manage it online, I looked under the "transfer money" option (I wanted to deposit some more money given that it is now a new tax year) and it did not list it as an option. Therefore, I cannot transfer money in or out on-line. Looks like I'll have to do it be phone or at a branch. Has anybody else been able to add to it or withdraw on-line or would I have to set up an new ISA? Sorry if I'm being completely thick here. Now debtfree except for the mortgage!0 -
Opened one today & it was pretty painless. Took a little while but I did have 2 11 year old accounts with em (doh) which I was going to close but found out they only do online banking if you have a current account so left one of them open with no money in
All seemed ok though.
