Hi today my brother just changed his mortgage with A&L to another with them at a different rate they charged him £295, Is this correct?? Shouldn't they have reduced the amount to come into line with the regulations?

Phoned first thing this morning, after watching Martin on GMTV. I had a mortgage with Halifax from 1991/2003, so I raked out old docs. with acc. no. and dates. It took approx. 3 mins, to get a refund of £35.00. Not a huge amount, but better in my account than theirs!. Hopefully another 3 grand will follow for bank charges!!! Cheers for that Martin, you made my day. £35.00 should cover a ltr. of vodie and few curries over the weekend!!
  • Hi - this is my first posting but just wanted to let everyone know that as a result of a 5 minute phone call to Halifax this afternoon they have promised to send a £100 cheque within 28 days. The mortgage I took out in 2001 stated £75 fee but when I moved to First Active in 2005 I was charged £175. All I needed to do was give them my roll/account number and they had all the dates and fees to hand - I am over the moon with this unexpected windfall. Cheers Martin - keep up the excellent work!!!

boom 123 it is all about how much they said they would charge you when you first took out the mortgage - if they said they would charge £295 in exit fees and then that is what they did - no claim can be made. If on the other hand they said they would charge you £75 and then charged £295 you can make a claim.
  • Hi, Well after seeing this on GMTV yesterday, I thought I'd give this a go, I remortgaged last year and was charged by The Woolwich £275, so rang them this morning on the number given on this site, hey presto there was a man already waiting to give me back my money!!! Well not all, he said I had to pay £150 which was the charge stated at the time, but I will get the difference of £125 + interest back into my account within the next 3-5 working days.........pushing my luck a bit I asked him to check if I had been charged in 2004 when I cleared the Barclays Mortgage for the Woolwich one, apparently then I hadn't been charged as they are both the same company, well it was worth asking eh, you just never know with these banks.......think I'll dig out the paper-work all the same!!! Good luck to everyone else, and thanks Martin and everyone for all your tips, and help xxx
  • £218.38 from the Woolwich took 5 minutes well pleased thats my holiday spends sorted thanks Martin

This is not an MEAF. This is a mortgage product fee/switch fee which is outside the scope of the FSA ruling.

Lenders can charge you anything they like as an up-front fee for a mortgage product AND for switching between mortgage products. If you choose to take the product, or make the switch, you have to pay whatever they ask.
