Find a cheaper one? (Either ring or gf would do ...)

Sorry, there's been some previous threads about engagement rings and best places to buy them, worth doing a search for them.

Hm, I don't think you should go looking for a ring with the "I have to spend about a month's pay" mentality. When we went looking for my engagement ring; I had my heart set on a square princess cut solitaire set in platinum. We spents days and days looking at loads and none were quite right and they ranged in price from £1200 to £7000. In the last shop (well, it was the last shop because I saw THE ring and stopped looking :rotfl: ) I noticed a gold ring set with a square amythest flanked by two slightly smaller square diamonds. It was nothing like what I had in mind but it was perfect....and it was great surprise when we were told it was £350. :j
I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....

Why? My fave - it almost leapt off the tray at me - was 3 or 4 times the cost of Troo's, and I know it was a long time ago but no way would I have wanted one which cost the earth!

A ring that costs £2000 in an exclusive jewellery shop may not necessarily cost £2000 in a small, family run jewellers.

My ring (bought last August) three quarter carat square cut solitaire, in a solid platinum setting (solid as in not claws) and an 18 carat gold band. A similar ring was £2500 in a well known, expensive, jewellers but at a smaller, less well known, local jewellers it was less than half that price...and then it was reduced as well :D

Choose what style, size stone and setting you want and look around the shops for similar rings to get an idea of who charges what for what.

What size stone does your fiance want? I would rather have a smaller, clearer, diamond with fewer flaws than a large, low quality diamond......Then again I would rather have a large, flawless diamond!
Just run, run and keep on running!

mine cost about a tenth of his monthly salary but i loved the design and hadn't seen anything else like it. price wasn't important, he did ask if i was sure because it was cheap and the diamonds are tiny but i was sure, i loved that ring, can't wear it now i'm pregnant though, i've got sausage fingers :D

Said this on another thread, but mine was made using a diamond from OH's late gran's "dress ring" and then set in platinum. It didn't cost a month's salary for him. What it is, is: very special, thoughtful and it's got a bit of history. Admittedly every diamond has got a "bit" of history - few million years worth of history.

OH had been told about the "one month's salary" rule, but I don't think that that is really necessary at all. The main thing is that it's special to you and your fiancee because it signifies the beginning of the rest of your lives together, irrespective of cost.

My only tip would be to let ur gf chose her own ring.I originally wanted an amethyst with a diamond either side but once I put them on my finger in the shop I changed my mind, they didn't look right. In the end I got a beautiful single diamond.Hubby pointed out which one he would have chosen for me had he bought it and surprised me but I didn't like it at all.Mine wasn't cheap but wasn't expensive either but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one.I have to admit even though its a beautiful ring I only wear it when we go out as I'm so paranoid losing the diamond.IMO its not how much you spend that counts, its what the ring symbolises. If mine had cost £1 I would still love it (hubby wishes thats all it cost...lol)
:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:

A friend of my mum never got an engagement ring - they bought each other a watch and then the wedding band was set with diamonds. Very simple, very effective and exactly what they both wanted.
