Default The MSE European Referendum? Poll results/discussion

Poll ran between 11-17 March '08

The MSE European Referendum: what'd be your vote on the Lisbon Treaty?

Last week in parliament there was a major spat about whether to have a referendum either on the new European Lisbon Treaty (which replaced the constitution) or even on Britain in Europe itself.

As the decision was 'no referendum', I thought it'd be fun to see what MoneySavers think.

Which is closest to your view?

A. FOR the Lisbon Treaty. If there was a referendum I'd vote for it. 13% (520 votes)
B. AGAINST the Lisbon Treaty. If there was a referendum I'd vote against it. 70% (2725 votes)
C. POLITICIANS SHOULD DECIDE. It's too complex, no referendum, let them decide. 8% (312 votes)
D. DON'T KNOW. I don't have a view; it's all too much. 9% (336 votes)

Voting has now closed, but you can still click 'post reply' to discuss below. Thanks

When the treaty was ratified, the Portugese trade union federation stressed that the treaty will increase the numbers working across Europe without contracts, rights, pensions and paid holidays.
In this country, Unison general secretary has called the treaty "a borderless blueprint for privatisation".
The treaty also commits all EU members to "undertake progressively to improve their military capabilities".

So more arms spending, less public services and poorer working conditions? No thanks.

Crikey Charlton, thats a bit extreme. You wanna join the the Cameron revolution mate and be a caring and compassionate tory.

All that old school vitriol ain't gonna win votes.

On the Question Time programme last week, Marcus Brigstocke asked the audience for a show of hands of how many wanted a referendum on the treaty.

About 15 to 20 %

Then he said out of those, keep your hands up if you've read and understood the treaty.

No hands at all

I personally believe that the UK should TOTALLY withdraw from the EU, and stand on its own.

Keep the trade open with Europe yes by all means, but do certain things to make sure people do not take advantage of the country.

Those with a 2 year or more prison sentance - send them to labour camps / chain gang them like in the US.

Those who wish to come into the country with no english, and little working skills, they can spend 2 years working in coal mines (earning a living, not doing it for nothing), and earn their way into the country.

Death penalty should be bought back in, but no hanging, no lethal injection, just a gun, and a bullet. God I sound like a right little hitler, but hell, I only want to see the country become strong again.

Exactly. "Don't know" got my vote. And it will continue to do so until I read it (which means I read it, not take the word of our friends in Fleet St).

I have read the Treaty, from cover to cover, for my job. Is it confusing? Not really, but you do need to have a copy of the old Treaties with you because a lot of it is along the lines of "In Article 17, delete the first two sentences, move the third paragraph before the second, and add this text:" etc.

If you can't be bothered with that, and want to read a document which shows what all these changes produce, then read this (produced by the Foreign Office): http://www.fco.gov.uk/Files/kfile/FC...edTreaties.pdf

(Just to add that I don't work for the government or a political party.)

Default Get out of the EU!

If there was a vote for Britain to get out of the EU tomorrow, I would vote to get out now while we still have any sense of Britishness left in this country !

I don't need to read any lengthy documents that have been cleverly worded to know that being in the European Union is not good and will never be a benefit for this country.

Does anyone see the irony in option 'C'?

POLITICIANS SHOULD DECIDE. It's too complex, no referendum, let them decide.

If we stay in the EU, one day our politicians WON'T be allowed to decide anything.

"I don't need to read any lengthy documents that have been cleverly worded to know that being in the European Union is not good"

...not sure I agree with you. I would think to "know" anything, you would have to read it, or at least attempt to objectively read around it to come to an informed decision.

Sometimes I wonder why we have democracy, if we're just going to use intuition to vote!

Its too easy, for both pro and anti europeans, to just use this issue as an excuse to express their opinion on how they feel about the EU. In my opinion, there are good and bad things about the treaty, though I'm cautiously in favour. However, I'd rather elected politicians made the decision for me, as their job is to represent my interests and I am confident they will. Our job is to make sure those interests are heard, by writing to them, talking to them, and reading about the issues so that we know what we're doing too. Most importantly of all, we dangle the carrot of re election and the stick of ousting a government. Its not a perfect system, but if you attempt to be well informed, then it works

If we did as you want I don't think there would be many wage earners left. I'd certainly be off like a shot!
Also who would want to do business with us if we pulled out of the EU?
With the world recession as it is we wouldn't even be able to attract the old staples of American & Japanese tourists!!

Think again?

Do they have to use gobbledy-gook to write these damned things Is it another Brussels directive to use more words than is ever necessary

If I knew what they were talking about, I would make an informed decision As it is, I'll just use the experience of living with what Ted Heath got us into to say that I whoel-heartedly support Britain leaving the European Union.

I will always vote against the EU all the time that the French only pay 500 Million into the kitty, whils we pay in at least 16 Billion.
Remember we get a derisory amount back. We with Germany are are funding just about all the EU buget

Agreed, Does anyone else remember how much information was given to us to enable us to make an educated decision when the UK voted to join the Common Market in 1973?

Also in the 1997 General Election I was doorstepped by a lackey from Goldsmiths Referendum Party who asked if I would vote for them so " We can have a Referendum and get out of Europe" when I asked what would happen if we had a referendum ad voted to stay in?

He literally ran away!!

Eh?

Every company that does business with us now would do business with us if we pulled out!

Why would Merc, BMW, Volkswagon, Bosch, etc etc etc not sell to us anymore?
