Apologies I posted a local link for Bristol for this, but it turns out its nationwide 8-11 Sept http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/.

Loads of buildings are opening up for free and are allowing visitors to celebrate England's fantastic architecture and culture. Some venues you will need to prebook, otherwise a fab weekend to be had visiting some fab places for free.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

Isn't London having an open weekend or is that something different?
I remember when this was just a little website! :money:
  • Great! Thanks for this information, I remember this from last year and there were loads of great things to do in my local area (Lancaster) and the best thing is they were all free!

Please note that NOT all English Heritage sites are participating in the Free Open Days. I called English Heritage yesterday to check out the info. Some needs pre-booking.

The museum I do some voluntary work for (the Anson Engine Museum in Poynton, Cheshire) is not an English Heritage Property but will be opening free of charge on Friday 9th as part of the HOD event. Look on the link for all the venues - there are sure to be plenty near you. Enjoy the opportunity to visit places you haven't been to before.

    hi,
are any sites in midlands free?can u suggest the best place to visit?
    Thanx
  • Midlands has Birmingham Aston Hall and Jewellery Quarter Museum and Blakesy Hall - excellent for free. Also try Worcester for the Cathedral - free admission to the library, usually £5.
This is a great deal for a family day out, and if you are near Birmingham the Artsfest this weekend is Birmingham's best ever freebie.

I drove about 15 Miles today to visit Tilbury Fort opnly to be told that they are offering free entrance on SUNDAY only. Other sites of interest WERE available today so I think that it is all of the sites over the period of 8-11th but not all of the sites for the whole period.

Hope this helps someone to not make a wasted journey.

i enjoyed myself anyway cos the weather was lovely.

    Thanks for this info OP.

Enjoy free entry to hundreds of National Trust places to visit on Saturday 9 September 2006 and help make history.

The doors to many of our houses, gardens and other much-loved properties around England, Wales and Northern Ireland are opening for free on 9 September to celebrate Heritage Open Days, as part of the History Matters – pass it on campaign.

hope this helps someone - sorry if already posted
