I always use a splash of bleach in with my whites and they are always bright. I also often use it for pastals to keep the bright. In the Uk people seem to be a bit wary of using bleach for laundry but elsewhere it is used as a matter of course. An eggcupfull in a frontloader or a cupfull in a toploader is enough to keep things white if used regularly.

If you do add bleach rememeber that it will inhibit the bio action of your powder. Either use non bio or add after a good portion after the wash cycle has been completed. This is dead easy with a toploader but if you have a frontloader and can't open the door mid cycle you can get round this by adding the bleach to a pint of water and pouring through the soap drawer. Hello Jamiedodger

It is optical brightener that gives white garments that 'brightness' finish, bleach alone will not achieve the same results.

I keep my white garments white by using Persil automatic powder only, I only use fabric softener in my non white washes.

the other option is to leave them on the line outside for a few days, in rain and the sun and it brightens them tremdously. i do this every so often with the kids school shirts.

    Nile! :)

    Glad I caught you! :)

Can I ask a big favour? Would you please write up a sort of definitive article on laundry, whites and stains from your own experience so that I can add it to our cleaning index as a must read bit... in your own time of course... just start a thread and I'll add it to the links quicker than you can say Persil Automatic :)

Depending on what you are washing a hotter wash cycle may be all you need, If you are considering boiling I assume it is something that can safely take a hot wash so try this with your regualr detergent before investing in anything else.

Not very old style but occasionally I add Ace bleach to my white loads, brings them up beautifully and I hardly ever use anything other than a cold cycle for it;) .

Dylon do a re-whitening product, you just soak your whites in it overnight and they come up looking like new.
