I think that would depend on when and who wired in the orignal consumer side cable to the master socket (BT or DIY) and if it's hard wired in or an rj45 type plug and extension lead used.

You don't seem to understand what is meant by the term 'master socket'. If no extension sockets are fitted, there is no wiring to disconnect at the master socket. Perhaps you should read post #1 again.

Pin 4 is used in PABX installations for earth recall.

Yes espresso you are entirely correct, I should have paid more attention.
My apologies stevemcol for confusing you.
At least I now known what connection 4 is used for.

As I understand it wire 3 is/was the "bell-wire" which was used for the old fashion phones with electromechanical bells in and as for wire 4 nobody seems to know what it was ever used for, not even the BT engineer I asked!

Wire three also required for some el-cheapo made for UK use only modern phones too, though mostly BT badged ones. However if you have ADSL then you will have filters which do the same job.

It's about time the UK stated all phones must include a ring capacitor circuit and not have to rely on pin 3.

i would say i definetly have a problem with the internal wiring somwhere. the router is currently plugged in behind the master socket and i have an ip profile of 5500kbps. as soon as i reconnect the plate and fit the router to the front of it this drops initially to 3500kbps and then slowly degrades as the adsl max service 'trains' itself to accomodate the noise on the line. eventually i end up with a throughput of around 0.1kbps.

i have 4 extensions after the master socket and would be happy to disconnect some of these competely as i dont think i will ever need them. i have looked at the wires behind the master plate as described above and have 2 wires to each of the pins. would i need to disconnect them both from pins 3 and 4 to carry out the process we are discussing? could i assume that one set of wires serves half of my extensions?

It does sound like you have proved that your internal wiring is causing your speed problem. Yes, try disconnecting all the wires from pins 3 & 4 at the master.

Another problem is that some extensions are wired with burglar alarm type cable which although perfectly OK for voice, will degrade broadband due it it not being twisted pair telecoms cable.

cheers espresso :) why did you have to complicate things? :)

i could do with just disconnecting 2 or 3 extensions altogther and keeping the others to connect the phone to. the master socket is right near the front door and at the moment everything is plugged in to it. thus the router gets bashed everytime someone comes through the door. i guess that this isnt an option though.

Hi I am a bit nervous about removing wires etc, is there a way of finding out when an exchange has been upgraded, I am paying for up to 8mb but am only getting 1.1. My provider tells me they are waiting to up grade the exchange, but can't say when! Although BT isn't my provider can they tell me if the exchange has been upgraded, to ensure that my ISP provider isn't pulling a fast one?
    thanks

Sorry, I was just pointing out that disconnecting unnecessary wiring will not always improve matters. Depending on the state of your wiring, it may be better to disconnect all of your extensions, work out exactly what you actually require and redo the minimum number of extensions correctly. On an ADSL enabled line only two wires 2 & 5 need to be cabled around the property but just make sure that it is proper twisted pair cable.
