    I did that and got this message

    no operation can be permormed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected

  • try leaving it plugged in and reboot. Is there a light on the router when you plug the ethernet cable in?

    have you a cable between ur wife's laptop and the router ?

    Is the a light on your hub/router to the coresponding port ?

    Is the cable - possibly a crossover cable ?

    ping 127.0.0.1 work?

    Could you post the results of

    ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt
    notepad c:\1.txt

    Edit .. if there is no light, then either you have the wrong cable, or something is bust, or possibly the driver for the NIC, or TCP/IP isn't installed.

  • is tcp/ip installed in control panel, network connections, local area connections?

    Did you leave a space after the word ping?

    if you type ipconfig on it's own, what does it say?
