The Reduced section: Your best bargains

... which do you use?
I always go to Sainsbury's and check out their reduced/quick sale items. I find that, compared to Tesco/Asda (who tend to mark down stuff which needs to be used by the morrow) Sainsbury's reduced items have a couple of days to run before the use by/best before dates. Not their veggies though, they are still quite pricey!
Then I hit the meat isle and snap up what I feel is a good deal, finally I go to there "pallet" of misc. stuff ie: dented tins etc.
Then ... I pay and leave! (pick up their leaflets at checkout first for any coupons which could be used elsewhere/next visit.

My local co-op mark down by 50% and always have at least 24 hours on. Quite often stock up monday mornings with half price meat for the freezer.
Our local Asda seems to only reduce by 20% even if it's going out that day!!!0 -
Ooops - making boo-boo's

Seems to vary from store to store even within the same chain.
For example an Asda in Glasgow routinely reduces any cereal where the box has been damaged by 50%. Always go to the reduced section first.
However, I noticed that the Asda in Kilmarnock only knocks around 20% off items with similar 'damage'.
Same goes for bashed tins etc. so the stock management within stores must have a certain amount of discretion as to how much of a 'loss' their store takes.MFW 2015 #41 = £20,515/£20,515

My local shop is Sainsburys and I have had some really good reduced items there. So much so that if I can't get a loaf of bread for 20p, I won't buy it cos it will be that price next visit. They have a reduced section for veg/fruit, chilled foods, chilled meat and fish and dried/packet goods and I am the one who is always busy searching through these different areas for anything I can use!
Do not find Tesco as good for reductions though sometimes get a few bits, sometimes it is luck and Sainsburys reduce stuff from ££££ to pence!0 -
I have limited choice in my town, but have noticed that Sainsbury's reductions are really a bit silly! Eg recent finds were:
frying steak which was £2.77 for 89p
turkey steaks which were £1.99 reduced to 20p (and they had quite a few of them, now reside in my freezer!),
sausages reduced to 20p per pack (can't remember the original price, but frankly I didn't care! !!!!!cats loved them, and so did I!)
4 pack of American muffins reduced to 10p, mountains of them on the shelf. Only bought one pack as I am trying to regulate my "treats" to occasional rather than two or three per day
Pack of 12 mini quiches, were £1.99 (or so) reduced to 50p
Half a turnip always available at 10p, or even 5p (though it's called Swede in England...and is bigger over here in N.Ireland)
There are usually reductions on bread and cakes around the 20p - 50p region. I've stopped buying bread though, but when I did eat it I used to fill my freezer for very little dosh.
It seems Monday late afternoon is a good time in my local store for these reductions. I rarely buy anything from Sainsbury's that is full price (though bought the magazine today at full price for the coupons and for the attached bar of chocolate, so much for cutting down!).0 -

snowyowl what do you do with the coupons? Can you use them in Tesco or is it only good for Sainsburys? Please tell me if there are any good ones and also what is the chocolate?? Didn't notice any chocolate attached to mags in Sainsburys but probaly didn't look properly!
Thanks for helping me out on my never ending quest for knowledge in this money saving world0 -
So, by the looks of things, the "Sainsbury's Shuffle" is the way to go then!?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our local Sainburys is rubbish for bargains, the prices are high enough as they are and we are lucky if they knock 20p off.
The local Co-op is the best one but you have to hit it at the right time about 10 in the morning is when they do the reductions and stuff is usually down to half price.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

They take sainsburys coupons in mt tesco's, less fussy about them than anything else!0

I havent shopped in Sainsburys for ages, I agree they reduce items quite a bit but so do Tesco, plus I can use coupons and my clubcard too. I'm starting to shop in Lidl, Tesco and local greengrocers soon, so cant be bothered to go to Sainsburys. I do love their magazine though, really interesting and a bargain at £1.20 ish.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
