I do think that I have got worse since I lost my beloved Mum 4 years ago.
But I don't know what the connection is? She was very restrained with her cosmetic and toiletries use. But she used to have such a laugh teasing me about my purchases. I used to love giving her stuff that that I thought she would like. All her clothes and posessions are still just as she left them. Me and my sister still can't bear to give any of her stuff away, even though we know our Dad would like us too. To be honest, she would be the type of person who would want it all to go to the charity shop. She was such a tidy person. All her clothes are colour coded. All her shoes have shoe trees, everything stored and presented like a posh shop.
You would not believe that I am her daughter from the chaos of my wardrobe.
My mum was only 66 when she died, she had been very poorly for a long long time, but had been a great hoarder (Not from a shopping point of view, just from a war-time 'never throw anything away' point of view). I found it easier to clear her things very gradually. I chose a shop from a charity she would have supported, with a warm and friendly staff. I selected maybe 10 things or a carrier bag full at a time and took them along. Special things, I carefully wrapped and put in a suitcase to store in the loft. She was a great knitter and had some lovely things she had made which were hardly/un worn, a couple of her elderly friends were delighted to have these. In the end, I had to finish clearing the last of her things very quickly as my dad moved into a home and the house sale went through rapidly. It was a very difficult time and I was glad I'd had time in the first place to start to deal with her personal things. It is a very emotional thing to do though and maybe now is not just the moment to worry about that for you.
Sometimes, we go the other way to our parents. After being brought up in a cluttered home with too much stuff around, and then having to dispose of all that accumulation of stuff in a hurry, I am exactly the opposite to my mum in that respect too and like life to be pared down!0 -

Morning Everyone :j
I cant remember who said but i have roughly added up all the items on the original thread. The Liz Earle items alone was about £700
Sales addict - Well done for posting your photos! It seems like you have lots of different brands and products.
Do you tend to buy things to try them and see if you like them?
My problem is i have found a few ranges i love so buy too much of those, rather than buying lots of brands ive never tried. I've always been a bit worried about buying brands i dont know as i think i wont like them and it will be a waste, but i guess im wasting money with the method i have too!
Faelia - Yes i have a lot of tissues :rotfl:I used to be a nanny (now a teacher) and i found them very handy for my handbag and in the car etc.
That Nivea spray deo is the only one i use, it works for me and the smell doesnt bother me at all. The reason i have so many is i only buy it from Boots when its on 2 for £4 or a similar offer
I'm really glad i posted my photos and as many of you have said, i wont need to buy anything for a looong time:rotfl:

Now I'm good about not using the Boots vouchers (hopefully now I won't even get any in the first place!), my downfall is TKMaxx - I can't resist popping in to see what beauty bargains they have. I have been very good during the past few weeks and resisted a Philosophy body moisturiser for 70p (it would have been 70p wasted on a body moisturiser I don't need, right? :A ), an Aromatherapy Associates bath gel for £2 and a Korres body moisturiser for £3. It was really hard to put them back on the shelf but I still feel really proud of myself weeks later. I should try to avoid the shop altogether though so I don't get tempted in the first place.
There is no way I would have been able to resist those products at those prices. I will be avoiding TK Maxx for the duration of this callenge. I just need to remind myself how much I hate the layout of the shop, the long queues at the checkout, and the non-existent customer service:)0 -
For me it is the pleasure of owning something lovely, frivolous and expensive - I grew up surrounded by very practical, down-to-earth women who were 'no nonsense'. As a child, so many of the wonderful things in life, like 'scent', light coloured carpets, white lacy socks and floral disinfectant seemed to be 'a waste of money'.
I think I'm redressing the balance a bit now - although my list of luxury items has changed a little over the years! :rotfl:
What a lovely post and all so totally understandable:)
Don't lose your frivolous side will you?0 -

Thankyou Bronnie,
my Mum was 68. She died of a massive heart attack, having never had a days illness in her life. She seemed a good 20 years younger than her age,to us. The shock of losing her has taken a long time to come to terms with. I am going to speak to my sister about clearing a few things at a time. We could easily take them to the British Heart Foundation. Although thinking about it, now is not quite right because my Dad will be starting his Chemo treatment soon. But what you suggest is definitely the way forward I think. Thankyou for that, it must have been such a hard time for you.0 -

Yes I have lots of different brands.
All bought from House of Fraser sale,Tk Maxx, Boots clearance and Brandalley.
I started trying to total it up as Lynzpower suggested but I just gave up. All I kept thinking about was how much I had saved. Even though I know that is just nonsense. Luckily I have very tolerant skin:) I have been through my own Liz Earle stage too:)
You see, I do use my stuff on a daily basis. It would make a good comedy sketch to see me applying all the different creams to each different area of my face and body. Think Niles Crane out of Frasier and you might come somewhere close to it. (Not all the ones on the table you understand, just the ones I have selected for that particular week:D I move them to what used to be my daughter nappy box and change a lot of them weekly)
I always stick to no 7 p+P but that is going to change once I have finished my stash as I have seen the error of my ways there.
Next weekend I might photograph by cosmetics. I love my Stila stash.
What a saddo:o:(0 -

No, you know you don't need to be. You know enough of my 'issues' to know there is always another side to the coin:o0
