why is there so much hostility towards trades unions here?

Same here......We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. tbf most of the decline in manufacturing/mining etc took place well before labour imo (and the long-term unemployment in areas where those industries were dominant is a lot longer than 12 years now)

Im a union rep for unite and i can understand why people hate unions, its not the small union rep on the shop floor its the senior reps, convenors, and the like of tony woodley that people hate.
I remember a few years ago the place i work a man called tony woodley came down to the nec and made a speech, for all the workers at my place to agree terms and conditions to secure the future of longbridge, in the next few months it was sold and we were stuck with the !!!!!! terms he had agreed for us.
Likewise now the old convenor and all the old senior reps negotiate a load of !!!!!! terms and guess what they all get paid off and get massive redundency packages, leaving the rest if us with the !!!!!! they have agreed.
To be honest though the union is only as strong as its members, and the biggest issue i have is my fellow workers belive all the bullsh!t the senior reps spout, and i can see from a mile we are going to get stitched up......
Its bad enough having management thinking they can do what they want, when they want and telling lies, the problem now is who are the union at top level looking after??
their members, or themselves?
tony woodley got a 30,000 pound pay rise this year all the members fees went up to pay for that, do you really think he deserves it, i dont.0 -
Thanks for posting new_home_owner. For me, it's exactly that. I am grateful to the meetings I was able to have with our local union rep, who was a knowledgable sounding board for me when my company wanted to double my workload. No-one in the Company knew I was seeing him and nothing became formal, he was just an expert who was on my side.
Also, there are some benefits with being with a Union - for instance, my will was done free, and I've had free accidental death benefit (not needed fortunately!), and there is cheaper conveyancing as well.
For me, it was well worth the £9 odd a month to know that I had someone to go to when I had questions which were worrying me.

PS - you are always seeing posts on MSE which describe bullying and unfair practices going on. My first question is do you have a Union rep. Mostly, it seems, these are small companies with no union representation. I'm glad that my Company did have that.0 -

& Tony Woodley deserves diddly squat, as look at longbridge now!It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Almost all unions have a political fund, this is because they would not be allowed to carry out activities such as lobbying at party conferences without one. This doesn't mean that the union is affiliated to any one particular political party (although some unions are). Everyone has the right to opt out of the political fund.0 -

This strike really is the most stupid strike in the history of striking.
If the Union wanted public support they should have started industrial action on 5/1 (or so) when people are away in their holiday destinations. Instead they start pre Xmas.
This totally sums up union mentality: doing the most stupid thing possible. They have their head so far up there @rse they can't see the real world around them.0 -
This strike really is the most stupid strike in the history of striking.
It's another example of a potentially suicidal strike:
Aim: Get better employment terms
Outcome: Redundancy because the company has ceased trading owing to the strike.
Bit like when people go on strike to protest over job loses - which gives the company the easy way out because they just sack the strikers: as long as they sack all the strikers it's seen as fair.0
