    No she never.

She knew fine it was smoke as result of a mechanical fault.

I wonder how she would feel if a short distance 2 children burned to death whilst she got a lift home:rolleyes:

I phoned 999 to let the police know that I was on a remote road by myself at 3 in the morning, and the car could be a hazard to on-coming motorists. When I got through to emergency services and said there was smoke coming out of the car, they insisted the fire brigade attended.

I didn't phone the fire brigade for a lift home, just very very grateful for their help. Had an emergency call come in, I would have been the first to jump out to let them get on their way.

In their own words though, they did not want to leave a lone female out in the middle of no-where at that time of the morning, with no feasible way of getting home. I'm so grateful for their consideration, but certainly didn't expect it.

Thanks everyone, even the slightly cynical posts are good at keeping things in perspective!

You're right - not the absolute worst thing in the world to happen - but bloomin' inconvenient!

DH's car - first MOT - failed on a teensy part, something about a faulty bulb on the dashboard, but has to be ordered. None of the garages up here had it, the garage eventually bought the small (but costly!) part from ebay of all places as Peugeot don't do it, but they can't release the car until the MOT is done. Hopefully should get it back tomorrow.

My car - was a split in the pipe between the water pump and something else ... RAC recovered the car the following morning, and even came and picked me up to get back out to it. So, although it was a sleepless night, the car is currently sitting immobile on the driveway. The garage was shut Saturday morning, so I'm hoping so much it's able to do it tomorrow. Very helpful RAC man has made a temporary patch up job, but only enough to drive it the mile to the garage, no further. He suspects they'll insist on changing the whole pump though as Vauxhall (we spoke to them afterwards) don't do just the pipe bit.

'Spare Car' - this one isn't resolved. BiL is unemployed and doesn't have any money to get petrol out or pick up tyre. Once we've got wheels again, we're going to go and sort it out, and just bring it home. We can park it on the street outside the house until trade in time.

Amazing how you struggle though when you've always had a car. For example, none of us know how / where to get a bus to get to the supermarket (if there even is one) ... so we ate freezer stuff today (frozen pizza and some left over beef stew ...! Good combination).

Has really made us appreciate how lucky we are!

ceebeeby i completely sympathise with you and just wanted to say take no notice of the stupid replys on here, some members can't help but be quite..well stupid! I posted a similar nightmare day and got the 'well if you think thats a bad day you know nothing' blah blah replys too!

Anyway..my sister rung me this morning at midnight after having to stop her car when a warning light came on..it wasn't smoke related but if it was id'e have suggested the fire brigade too as she has to drive down some really dark roads..you did the right thing.

I hope the cars all come together and one of these days you will laugh at this!

  • They always say things come in threes. Glad you got back safely OP and thankfully nobody was hurt. Hi Gaby! Hope things are going better for you too.
  • You should have called your breakdown services when you was with the car and given your name and address, they would have found you on the system

thats what I do when ever I have needed them in the past
