I got my first self assessment info yesterday, and a NI bill for £19.20 last week.

I have seen a few posts on here about both of the above, but because it never really concerned me at the time, I didn't bother reading them. :o

I think I have a few searches of the different threads to do!!

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/faqs/nicqse.htm#3

Do you think you'll be earning less than:

    £4,825 in 2008-9 tax year

    and/or

    £5,075 in 2009-10 tax year?

    (that's profit, not turnover!)

If so, apply for a National Insurance Class 2 small earnings exemption certificate
    info and application form: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cf10.pdf

It's not as simple a choice as it looks (i.e it's not just a case of "I can save £2.20 a week") as if you DO pay, you may get certain benefits, such as sick pay, maternity pay, etc.

FYI, I have a "proper job" as well as my MS work, I pay NI in my proper job, therefore have opted out of paying Class 2 NI for my MS work.

I received a similar bill last year, but rang the tax office and they confirmed that I wouldn't have to pay the NI bill (think it was about £21 ish) as I wouldn't be earning anywhere near the £4,825 just doing MS'ing so I then applied for the small earnings certificate, as monkey correctly advises!! :T The bill was then cancelled by HMRC :T Hope all that makes sense, hth;)

Thanks, that is such a help.

I have 3 children.... definitely don't plan on having a fourth, so maternity pay not an issue. I also work part time and pay NI on that income, so looks like will go down same route as you.

Once again, thank you!! (saved me lots of time searching)

Early indications are that I made a c£20 loss on my MSing for the last tax year (I only started in March).
