Hi,
Just bought a car from an ex smoker. It smells like an ash tray. Is there a cheap, econmical and quick way to get rid of the smell.
Thanks

Buy a swimming nose clip, attach to your nose when in the car and breath through your mouth.......no more ash tray pongs!
Alternatively, open all windows and you won't notice the ash tray pongs for the diesel fumes fogging you out!
Alternatively, leave a jacket on the back seat of your car when you park in a city centre street. Return to the street later to find the car has been stolen, report it to the police, claim on the insurance........then buy a new car but be sure to do a test drive first to check on its perfomance and whether it pongs!
A less flippant suggestion, have you tried Fabreeze on the seats and carpets?10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
Nile,
Thanks for the mad suggestions. Yes I have tried Fabreeze, it only works temporarily though.
I have heard that leaving a bowl of vinegar overnight might work... has anyone tried this ?

I have used scented candles in a sitting room to get rid of cigarette smells which worked, not sure if this is a good idea in a car though as you should never leave a burning candle unattended. (done my public duty bit by saying that - not being patronising I promise!
)
otherwise try sprinkling the upholstery with baking soda and hoovering it up (this is hard work). Should help remove the smell.
Good luck - would love to here how you get on.
Rxr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
mix some bicarb with water and spray it in the car all over the carpets and dont forget the ceiling
whats wrong with ciggie smell anyway ???
I object to people paying good money for fags then non-smokers getting the benefits of it, then doing nothing but complain
;D ;D ;D ;D
dont worry itll go when youve done a bit of driving with the window open

the thing I hate about kippers is
when you ask for a pair
how do you know your not getting two odd ones???0 -
make sure all the ashtrays have actually been emptied - lingering smells can sometimes be left with lingering ash. then when they are defo empty fill them with pot pourri or something similar. sometimes a neutrodol under the passenger seat helps soak up pongs too.
to add onto niles suggestions - borrow a wet dog from a friend and stick that in your car and go for a drive - it'll totally eliminate the smell of cigarettes - bleugh.Blah0 -
Had the same problem a few months ago after buying a 6 month old car from a smoker. Tried all the usual things, fabreze, air freshener, etc. but finally used a carpet/upholstery cleaning machine on the seats and carpets, make sure that you wash the ash trays and wash all of the plastic areas as the nicotine will have stuck to the surface. I went over the roof lining with Mr Muscle wipes to freshen it up, didn't leave any marks and the car is fresh as a daisy now. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I recommend the wet dog, as I smoke, and my dog went in the river a few months ago, and I can still smell it. Travel sickness works just as well.
Seriously, give it a jolly good hoovering, and dust with a damp rag, bit of vinegar, and remove the mats to hoover underneath, remember ashtrays, and drivers air vent need cleaning, and above and below sun visor, and all of rear view mirror, and steering column too.
For the wet dog, I need suggestions myself.0
