swedes - can be mashed and used as an alternative topping to shepherds/cottage pie. Can also be mixed half and half with mash as a side dish.
Mash them to have with mash potatos and haggis? :drool:0 -
Just a quick reminder for buling out a lasagne?
Red lentils - do I have to do anything with them first?
Chickpeas - canned - as above and do I puree them before putting them in?
I already put mushooms and onion in - anything else that won't look too obvious? I have some tried soya stuff from tesco - can I add a handfull of that too - and do I need to do anything with that first?
Thanks C xx0 -

Compost them    They're one of the few veg that I don't like, but DH has persuaded me to buy a packet of seed this year, so that we can try Beans on Toast

If you put it in an airtight container it shouldn't get weevils. As to the raising agents well, they might deteriorate over time but if so you can add some baking powder. Sooner used the better, but I wouldn't worry about another six months or so over the "best before" date. It's not a "use by" date after all.
Hi. Thank you! I did a lot of searching as I posted that question and it all seemed to say to shove it in the air tight container into the freezer. I wouldn't have thought of freezing flour, but hey. Is this really so commonly done as google seems to suggest? I'm willing to do it if it will help it last longer because, seriously, I bought 6kg and I'm never going to get through that amount this year. For some reason I thought flour was like pasta and would last forever and forever and...

Just thought I'd share a great tip I read about this. Put a fridge magnet over the lock on the car & it'll stop it freezing over
I've tried it and it does work!

I spotted this tip this morning on the 'Leftovers thread' and thought it might be useful to you
- haven't tried it but it sounds good . You may need to put a small jug of water in the microwave as I think that microwaves need some moisture in them to operate properly (not sure where I read that though).

A bit late now but swede is really nice when flung whole into a microwave and blasted on high for about 15-20 mins, then the peel falls off and the swede is sweet and soft and just gorgeous!
Oooh my fame is spreading already :rotfl: would also echo that swedes last a blooming long time, I have one in fridge I bought a month ago and it's still solid, not gone mouldy or soft!Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

Hope not too late...
Red Lentils, nah just bung them in the pan as long as they have about 20 mins cooking time that's fine ( not sure if pan or Slow cookering the lasange filling)
Chickpeas - I don't blend them but if you need to hide them, then do so!
Any other padding - how about a handful of porridge oats? And yes soya mince is fab stuff, goes a long way, my one I have to soak it for about ten mins in stock first before adding it in, otherwise it sooks up all the liquid and leaves none for the lentils and oats to take in!
