    A big no no.....it could crack your windscreen for real, also I used just coldish warm water once and it melted the ice and then refroze within seconds so not much cop really ;)

    Thanks to you both, I will stick to using de-icer as usual and hope have enough for tomorrow. Saw two neighbours down my road using a kettle this morn hence my question. Thought maybe I was being silly spending money on de-icer but guess not.

    ps to my silly Q about de-icer.

    I remembered reading that a piece of bluetack over locks stops them freezing over. Will try tonight as had lumps of ice in my locks this am that needed several goes with de-icer spray.
  • Anyone got a suggestion for anything exciting I can do with 4 swedes that I got today as they were whoopsied at asda (4 for 8p bargain lol)?

    Swedes last ages in the fridge. Just cook one everytime you do meat & veg. I sometimes freeze leftover cooked swede and add to currys.

    You could see if there is an opinion on this on the Motoring board.

    FWIW, I've done it numerous times, with tap hot water, and had no problems. Set the windscreen wipers going first so you don't get too much water 'lying' on the windscreen.

    It's also very useful if your car is prone to condensation: putting warm water on the outside clears it on the inside as well, to a certain extent, whereas scraping doesn't.

    Oh, and you can get battery operated gadgets for de-icing locks. Never had to use one myself. Just as well: DH kept the lock de-icing spray IN the car for some reason. :confused:

    I spotted this tip this morning on the 'Leftovers thread' and thought it might be useful to you :) - haven't tried it but it sounds good :drool:. You may need to put a small jug of water in the microwave as I think that microwaves need some moisture in them to operate properly (not sure where I read that though).

    Hi. I was just wondering about flour... I just bought four bags as they were ridiculously cheap but I didn't notice till afterwards why. Their best before date is this month. So, er, probably should have looked at that at the time but oh well. I expect flour will be fine long after that but then this is wholewheat flour and I'm reading different things on the internet. Something about freezing it, then bringing it out and...what? Just wondering if someone might advise on how to keep this flour going for a long time without it going off or getting weevils or whatever. Only plan to use it in cakes and that sort of thing, not bread, if that's at all relevant.

    If you put it in an airtight container it shouldn't get weevils. As to the raising agents well, they might deteriorate over time but if so you can add some baking powder. Sooner used the better, but I wouldn't worry about another six months or so over the "best before" date. It's not a "use by" date after all.
