hi can anyone reccomend the best method for my son to take his money to NY he'll only be 17 when he travels so I don't know whether he'd be able to use travellers cheques ?
I would check that out: when I ordered a batch I checked that I could give them to my sons to use, which I was told they could (and did). I don't remember giving any to the youngest who was only 16, but I can't remember if that was because I didn't trust him or because I'd been told only over 18s could use them. It looks as if only over 18s can order them.

However, the next best thing might be a Nationwide Current Account, if they will give a debit card to a 17 yo, which it looks as if they will - see here. It will take a few weeks to set up, but that's one of Martin's recommended cards for use abroad.

I would have suggested a Post Office Travel Money card for convenience and ease of use but you have to be over 18 for that.

Would be worth reading the article on the main site then asking your question on the discussion thread which is linked from the end.

Thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunatly NAtionwide don't allow under 18's to use a debit card (unlike most other banks!!) so i'm going to have to research travellers cheques further.
    Merry Christmas MSE!

Im off to NY and just wanted some advice on getting to Madison Sqaure Garden. Im staying over the river at the Hyatt Jersey City. Im assuming the PATH is the easist way to get over to Manhattan and then a bus?? Does anyone know any special buses dedicated for MSG.

Just got back from a long weekend, thanks to Markymoo and others for some great advice.
We stayed at the Cosmo and its very clean and a great location - our room was a bit small but we were not in it much. The Reade St Pub is really handy for late night drinks on the way back from a night out.
Mudville 9 was a bit expensive on the beer front but Ok for a stop off on the way back or out.
The Morgan Market Deli is the best around the area and does some very good food, breakfast especially even the local police were getting their food there.
The Soda shop next to the hotel does a very good breakfast as well great blueberry pancakes.
South St Seaport is pretty close about 15 minue walk and handy for the A&F clothes that my daughter raves about and we picked up some good bargains. Its worth a visit to see the staff - some of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen!
We managed to get some tickets for Hairspray from the Tkts booth here but you have to be prepared to queue - we got there at 10 as they open at 11 and were 8th in the queue - we paid $124 for 2 tickets in great position and the show was the best I have seen - I have seen about 5 shows in London but none anywhere near this level .
Try the Heartland Brewery at South St I especially liked Old Red Nose at $7 a pint a bit dear but lovely.
Staten Island Ferry was great as the weather was good - we had a short walk around the harbour and went for a coffee at the Greek cafe mentioned earlier in this thread and its broke up the journey nicely.
If you want a really nice meal try The View at the revolving Marriot Marquis it isn't cheap at $75 for the dinner menu but the food was superb and the views amazing.
Top of the Rock the first night was awesome - a very clear but cold evening about 5pm was brilliant if you can get there about 4:45 pm you get the best of both light and dark for $20.
Although we used the subway loads we also walked around a lot, Chinatown, Little Italy, Canal St, Times Square up to Bloomingdales we felt a lot safer than we do in London - there were a couple of weird moments( a drugged up guy trying to hump the ticket machine-yep straddled it at 14th St subway)but even in my hometown of Southampton there are places I wouldn't go at night.
We met some very friendly New Yorkers who offered advice on the best route on subways when we looked lost or a jogger in Central Park who stopped and chatted for 10 minutes in the pouring rain when we were trying to find Strawberry Fields.
We got some great bargains at Macys in the Thanksgiving Day sales plus our 11% card.
This thread was a great help to us and certainly saved us money we both loved NY and can't wait to go back.

the wife and i are just back from nyc from a long weekend(fri-tues night)saw loads,i would recommend citysights or grays buses for hop on hop off tours,we did downtown, uptown+night times ones great value ticket if you buy all togehter,we were staying in novotel times square, couldnt beleive how central it was 5 mins walk to macys(where we spent a fortune, but bought loads due to a 50% off sale and discount card) also took in a nhl ice hockey game, msg being across the road from macys was 5 mins walk also.when we visited the world trade centre site(ground zero)we got offered a guided walk for $5 each, this is well worth the money 2 guys who survived the trade centre take you on a walk round the site reliving there experiecnes(1 was a fire man from station next to trade centre who lost 7 men,he rescued loads and got knocked out twice doing so,and other was in a office on a floor above where jet hit and got out)visited madame taussads, grand central, rockerfeller day+night, central park etc,to much to remeber, had a few nice meals, also ate in hard rock cafe+planet hollywood,on the safety element subject never felt uneasy at any time in nyc, times square especially had 2 cops on every corner
a great time had by all,now home and jet lagged took me 22 hrs to get home from start to finish
Live in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!

Going to New york on Sunday, what is the best option/network for calling/ texting home( 2 or 3 times at the most) and texting each other when we are there. Is the city of the office clerk on the grayline hop on/off route. cheers
