MOT / TAX / Registration HELP !

Hi,

I hope you can help

I purchased a car last year and retained the V5C and MOT

My tax was due to expire so I tried to find my documents to purchase tax, I could not find my registration doc so I called DVLA who informed me my car was not registered to me so I needed to send in a V62 with my V5C to get a new one, I was also told to send along a V10 form along with the V5C, MOT certificate and Insurance document for tax

I sent all off as requested but DVLA have sent this out but cannot tell me where it has been sent to, I fear it has been sent to the wrong address possibly as I have moved recently, it was sent 6 days ago but I have received nothing.

I have managed to get a replacement Insurance document form my insurer

I cannot get a replacement MOT without the V5C according to most sites on the internet that offer replacements,

Please can you advise what steps I need to take to……

a) Get a replacement MOT
b) Get my vehicle registered in my name and get V5 document sent out
c) Get my vehicle taxed asap

Getting it taxed is the most important as the current disc has now expired, I have had the postal order waiting to send off for tax payment but I am now stuck with the above issues,

Please can you help ??? I dont know where to go from here as i require at least the V5C or even log book document number to get a replacement MOT alone.

  • So you only sent the V5 to the dvla 6 days ago?

Give them a chance to get it back to you.

Why didn't you sort this out when you bought the car?

By the way, you can't drive the car or park it on the road when it's not taxed.

presumably you told your insurers that the car is registered in your name too, which it isn't (yet)

NO, i sent it on 29th October, they posted it out 6 days ago, i have been calling to try and find where they have posted it but they have no idea.

Give them a chance to get it back to you

They have already said it should be with me by now, last week.

Why didn't you sort this out when you bought the car?

The car had tax on it when i bought it, i only found out that the previous owner did not send off the V5 when i called to enquire about getting my car taxed being as i could not find the V5 amoungst my paperwork.

By the way, you can't drive the car or park it on the road when it's not taxed

:T Thanks for that informative remark, i think i am aware what tax is for else why would i be concerned that i need to buy it ? What would you propose i do in this situation, i expect you have an answer as you have mentioned this otherwise irrelevent point ?

presumably you told your insurers that the car is registered in your name too, which it isn't (yet)

Yes that is the case, probably as with most people as they insure the car the day they buy it but the paperwork does not get updated for a couple of weeks at least - i did everything as the procedure dictates and assumed i was the registered keeper.

Now is there anyone that actually wants to help out there?

I need to know how to get an MOT and a new registration document -

I dont not need people to list the problems that i know i already have, its solutions i am after.

With an attitude like that, it's ever likely you have problems!

YOU have to send off the V5 when you buy a car to register it in your name. YOU. There are very clear instructions on the document to tell you how to do it (subtitles for the hard of thinking, if you will).

Good luck finding what you need. I'd enrol for some charm classes while you're at it.

Thanks for the great help there, i think you need to check your facts before running your mouth,

Any V5 form will say that the V5C is to be given to the new owner to use until the V5 comes through the post - the previous owner signs this and sends it off, pretty standard practice really.

no need for charm classes i just need an MOT & V5 thaks, and if your help just consists of a list of problems that the issue i have may cause then i could do with out it, i know the problems hence why i am asking for help.

I have been polite in my query but i found your comments off topic, rude and couterproductive not exactly the kind of response the forum encourages, you could have just said you dont know or even better not wasted your time typing - what you said was not helpful, just annoying and its my feeling thats why you said it (what other reason is there ?), its really sad if thats how you get your kicks but whatever floats your boat so they say,

If anyone does have some advice it will be gladly recieved, can the thread please return to the topic at hand now ?

What ? so when you buy a car you retain the V5C and the V5 ?

Sorry but that is rubbish , you are a fool if you sell a car and let the owner walk away with YOUR V5 ! , think about it

The previous owner has to send it off, otherwise you could not send it off leave it in their name and use it for criminal activities, it a bit of a safeguard for the seller.

I have sold plenty of cars and always sent the V5 to DVLA myself to ensure the name is changed, i think you would be stupid not to - and on to pof that i always get them confirmation letter back form the DVLA as expected.

I did think there was good advice on this site, doenst look like the case for motering as you guys dont seem to know the basics ?

someone please confirm this, i cant see how you could think its a good idea to give away the your old V5 to the new owner and not send it off ? that is madness, car crime would be pretty rife if that was common.

Tinker and Landy , are you into car crime ?
  • I was trying to be helpful actually. I own several cars, and have had to register them in my name when purchased, so i know the system. When the dealer gives me the log book, it's clear that there are sections for me to complete and send to the DVLA. I usually do that on the way home from the dealership ;) The new logbook usually arrives within about a week. When I've put a private plate on the car I've gone to the nearest DVLA office - always useful to see someone to get these things sorted out (hint)

As you moved sometime before October 1st, how could you have managed to put the wrong address on a form you sent on October 29th??

TBH, I'm not sure there's anyone else to blame for the problems you're having now.
  • have you heard of google? it's quite useful. look what i found - advice direct from the government about what to do when you buy a car

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicle/DG_4022311

i'll quote some of it for you

"What you and the buyer need to do

You should notify DVLA using the appropriate section of the registration document or certificate. The section you use will depend on the type of document you hold. You should also keep a separate note of the buyer's name and address details.

If you have a two part registration document, complete the lower part headed 'notification of sale or transfer', detach it and post it at once to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR. This will not result in the issue of a new registration certificate, but if you do not do this, you may receive enquiries about the car's subsequent use.

Give the buyer the top part of the registration document and, if the vehicle is being sold privately, remind the buyer that DVLA must be informed at once that they have got the vehicle.

I put in the correct details, it just hasnt arrived at my house and was posted form DVLA 6 days ago,

I purchased this car from a private owner, not sure if that makes a difference to your experiance ?

I know for a fact that when i sell a car, I , send of the V5, there is no chance i would let a random person come and buy a car off me and let them walk away with all paper work in my name and no guarentee it will be updated,

What if someone purchased a car from you, took your V5 so you couldn't update the ownership then used it to ram raid a bank or run someone over, you would have the police at you door and you would be responsible for not sending off the V5. I dont think there is any arguing with that.

BACK to topic - i know i can get a new MOT for £10 if i have the document number of the log book (i dont) or the (v5c) i dont , i think my only chance is to send of for a new log book (V62) and waiting several weeks for that to arrive and then getting my tax after that, it just means my vehicle will not be taxed until the day those docs arrive (when i shall go to the post office and pay with my postal order purchased last week on the day), i just hope theer would be some knowledgable person who miught be abale to offer some helpful advice that may improve the situation for me.

Not a jot - same document, same process. Seller fills out their bit and new owner fills out theirs. And you should give the V5 over.

That's not what the government wants you to do though.

if i were to buy from you and commit some kind of crime an hour later, the police would check the database and still find the car registered to you whether you hold the V5 or not.

BOTH BUYER AND SELLER HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER LAW TO INFORM THE DVLA OF CHANGE OF KEEPER.

As you're focussing on vehicles you've sold, we must assume that having done everything required of you, the buyers did what was required of them.

YOU DIDN'T DO THAT AS THE BUYER OF THIS CAR.
