Whey Hey - we're going on Thursday!
Flights - got duffed on, left it way too late to book and have paid the price (sob). Continental out of Bristol to Newark £500 each! But.... the times suited - wanted to get there as early as possible and leave as late as possible to eek out the stay. Btw, very helpful lady at Continental called Pam - sorted the seats out. Could have got £350ish each a couple of months ago, Delta out of Manchester.
Hotel - made a little here from published prices. Wellington, Manhattan (mixed reviews I know). Saved $200 and reservations assurred me 'upgrades' as I stated it was a special occasion (!). We'll see, and I'll report back!
Car from Airport - have it on good authority that a cab will not take 4 people and associated bags (approx $45 plus tolls and tips from Newark to hotel). After a longish flight, and two miserable teenagers (!), don't want a bus or train. Carmel cars will transport us door-to-door, in a mini van, for $60 plus tolls and tips.
Still can't wait - it's been over 20 years since I was last in NYC!0 -
:j We are booked.. 19th Feb for 4 nights, flying with Virgin. YAY!!!:j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j    :beer:0

*laughs*
a cab, can easily take 4 people and luggage, if you wait for one of the mini van styles they have... these are fairly common at the airport, and will still cost you the same as a normal cab..
how do i know... i've been to NYC 10 times, with varying amount of people... so your good authority is wrong.0 -

Ahh Markymoo - didn't make myself clear. I was of course referring to a 'normal cab' as being unable to take 4 plus luggage. The suggestion from my good authority (lives in NYC) is that the drive past mini van cabs can be a bit thin on the ground at Newark (don't know about JFK).0 -

well.. if you're landing at Newark, then you won't even have any New York Cabs there... cos it is in NJ... and yeah.. NJ cabs are awful...
Carmel Car Service is probably the best idea!0 -
I'll be landing in Newark on Saturday. So you sure you cant get cabs from there to NY Hotels in Manhattan.0

Me and OH went in March it was freezing!!
We live in manchester but the flights were really expensive so we travelled from heathrow for £200 less!
As I have family down there we stayed with my dad for a few days and went for a trip around london (had abit of twin centres going on)
Also managed to book the flight so that it flew back into manchester and the total cost was £230 ea return (this is with statravel and we are both under 26)
We stayed in a hotel called the ameritania on west 59th street.
It was a stones throw away from both times square and central park!
We did the hop on hop off buses at night and for 2 days!We went to the statue of liberty on the free staten island ferry!
During the day we ate hot dogs and pizzas and deli food! it was not expensive at all.
We went to tkts at night and got tickets half price for 2 shows mamma mia and chicago!
The total cost of holiday including spending money all flights and hotel for 4 nights:£700 ea.
Stock up on clothes as designer gear is half the british price.
We went up the empire state building and had a horse and carriage around central park at night time!
It was a place I always wanted to go and now Ive finally been yey!!
I did enjoy it but wouldnt go back as I have seen what I wanted to see.
Unless of course i win the lottery and feel the need to buy a penthouse apartment overlooking the park!!
It was very cosmopolitan on the upper east side too.hsbc o/d-[STRIKE]£1000[/STRIKE] £650
hsbc cc -£1500
virgin cc -£1500
Aim:To be debt clear by Dec 080 -

What?
I never said you couldn't get a cab... i said you couldn't get a NY cab..
it is in New Jersey, so you get a New Jersey cab, and in NJ, there are very few of the minivan style cabs..
i wish people would read the conversation, not jump in to a single post and start worrying!0 -
So, markymoo, since I now defer to your expertise in all things NY, for five adults plus luggage from JFK, is it worth waiting for a minivan taxi, or getting two taxis, or booking a Carmel car?
I quite fancy the limo ride just once in my life ...
Oh, and if it's Carmel cars, will they suggest what time they should come and pick us up to give us time to clear immigration? 'Cos I have no idea ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
