Las Vegas

This may be the wrong place for this but we are currently looking at going on holiday to Las Vegas. Only snag is that it HAS to be in the school holiday as I am a teacher. The pricing in the school holidays, as people with children will know, is absolutely ridiculous and I have been searching around on the internet for cheap (ish) flights and hotels. I have managed to find a good deal at the start of the school holiday (end of July) for around £1700.00 ish for two people with Expedia. Before I book I'd like to TRY and see if I can get it for a little bit cheaper. Anybody got any ideas?

Also, has anybody been to Las Vegas and gone of some of the tours; e.g. to the Grand Canyon and are they worth all the time (thirteen hours on coach) and money?

Thank you very much!

Have been to Vegas a few times. We have never bothered with the Grand Canyon trip as didn't fancy the coach journey or driving there ourselves. Our daughters went on one of the trips there on a previous visit and felt air sick when they went on the light plane flying round the Grand Canyon. Have stayed at Luxor and found the accommodation a bit tired, in need of a bit of a refurbishment. You can often get good deals on hotels on the strip by going on each hotels website. Normally you only have to pay for the first night's stay and it can be cancelled up to 48 hours before with a refund, so we start with one hotel and keep monitoring prices and deals and have changed our hotel 3 times each time for a better hotel or price. I have stayed at Excalibur which is a reasonable value hotel, no baths in rooms though, only a large shower. Monte Carlo rooms were very good and clean. Mirage good. Aladdin a good location, rooms good there. Paris hotel, got upgraded to a premier room which was lovely. Treasure Island good as well. The last 3 hotels are all almost centre strip so a good location. We try airline network, expedia and ebookers for flights. You can also fly Delta etc if you are happy to have a change in America, but it makes the flight really long and tiring. Make sure you sign up for frequent flyer miles with whichever airline you fly with. If you take out a BMI credit card with mbna I think they still offer 20,000 free miles. We have enough miles with them now to convert to a free virgin flight to Orlando this March. Daughter is in Vegas at the moment, making good use of the buffets and shopping, she is staying in Flamingo which she is also very pleased with. Hope some of this helps.

Oh I love Las Vegas and I could talk about it all day :)

Only during my 3rd trip did I visit the Grand Canyon, it just didnt apeal to me but i have to say I really enjoyed it. We spent a little more and went for the heli tour of it, left around 6am (it gets REALLY hot in the Canyon so I would recommend this time slot) and were back at our hotel by 10am ready to enjoy the rest of the day.

As for hotels, go on to the hotels website and 'sign' their guest book, they then send you email offers which can sometimes be excellent value. You could also try priceline (am i allowd to post that here?) the only 5 star hotel on the strip that PL offer is the venetian biddingfortravel is a great source when it comes to that.

Another top tip regards to hotels is try and arrive on a sunday and leave on a Thursday, hotel prices can triple at the weekends.

For a treat but on a budget if you are there on a weekend is book brunch at the circus circus Steak House. CC isnt a very nice hotel at all! BUT their steak house is one of the best in Vegas, the fillet Hubby and I had there was the best we have ever tasted. At brunch you get to enjoy the buffet which includes wonderful delights such as beef wellington that melted in your mouth but also you get to choose one item from the normal menu.....choose the fillet!!! Amazing value for money, we didnt need to eat again for the rest of the day LOL!

Any other questions just ask away :)

Las Vegas was a stunning place to visit and an amazing experience but wouldn't want to go back.... did the Grand Canyon Helicopter tour , stunning couldn't praise it highly enough..... also flew over the Hoover Dam and the Lakes on the way to the Canyon . We took the Champagne Breakfast trip down into the Canyon , I think I was speechless for the whole trip it was so spectacular and stunning ... we landed on the edge of the river for breakfast and were able to just wander for an hour or so..... The silence was deafening ....
We stayed at Circus Circus and found it an OK hotel , most people just there for the gambling and hardly left the hotel for their whole stay... enjoyed just wandering the strip and investigating the other hotels , Bellagio was the most spectacular methinks

    ENJOY

First off my advice would be to steer well clear of package holidays to Vegas, especially during UK school holidays. Vegas is primarily an adult destination so the school holidays (US or otherwise) are less relevant here than elsewhere. And it is the low season because the weather in the summer is so hot. But of course if you use a UK tour operator, they don't factor this nearly as much as they factor the UK school holiday impact.

You didn't say where you are travelling from and how long you are going for?

I have done a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon and it is fantastic, you are there in less than an hour and the whole experience is just stunning. Cost about 180 pounds each, but really good value.

As others have said , the trip to the Grand Canyon is well worth it , it's a must do IMO. I've been 3 times , the first was a coach and plane trip including a visit to the Hoover Dam. Wouldn't recommend it as you don't get such a good view on the plane and half the passengers (including me icon11.gif) were sick. The other two times were helicopter trips and were fantastic , the view is much better , the ride is much smoother (though I was sick on a helicopter trip in Hawaii recently  ) and you land in the canyon ,plus if you go at the right time you'll get to fly over the strip in the dark.

Another trip we enjoyed was a jeep trip to Red Rock Canyon.

Another must for me in Vegas is to eat at the Cheesecake Factory and also get some Krispy Kreme donuts from the Excalibur Hotel eatdrink026.gif

Direct flights to Las Vegas LAS are generally more expensive than other nearby airports such as Ontario ONT, Los Angeles LAX, Phoenix PHX, San Francisco SFO, car hire is often cheaper at these other airports as well.

    Airlines for internal flights include https://www.americawest.com https://www.southwest.com https://www.flyted.com https://www.usairways.com

    https://www.dollar.co.uk often have good deals.

If you are going to use Expedia get upto 5% cashback from Quidco, booked to go to Milan and got about £35 cashback a few months ago, tracked prettly quickly but took a while to payout.
